I realize that Louisville is currently bidding (and bidding is much different than actually hosting - my comment was the "current largest") for the FFA convention, although the numbers I keep seeing for that are 50,000 people. A very large convention without a doubt. But it's not reality yet. And until the FFA convention is won, the Quilt Show in Paducah will reign as the state's largest convention. Even if the FFA comes, it won't come close to providing $200 million dollars a day like you claimed.
This is one of the things that people in the rest of the state don't like about Louisville. This sense of superiority and enlightenment compared to the rest of the state is unfounded and ridiculous. Yes, you're far bigger than any other city in the state, but that doesn't mean you're God's gift to Kentucky.
|
Not really...I do find many people out in the state with an inferiority complex though. No one bashed Owensboro or Paducah or any other small town. if they did, please point out the posts. However, they are small beans compared to Louisville and I simply know you do not realize the economic impact Louisville makes on the state. Furthermore, the data from Village Idiot proves the Louisville MSA loses far and away more of its tax dollars per capita than anywhere.
I am not making up stuff up or pulling stats out my rear. Not only does Louisville host the largest conventions in the state, it hosts some of the largest in the COUNTRY:
"One of the top ten largest public facilities of its kind in the United States, the Kentucky Exposition Center features over 1.2 million square feet of indoor exhibit, meeting and public space. The expo center accommodates an amazing spectrum of events year round and hosts five of the nation's top ten largest conventions and tradeshows. For more information, log on to Kentucky Exposition Center."

Furthermore, where are your references about the Paducah show? I am sure its a great show but I am not buying it is that kind of impact. See the problem is, this thread has people coming on here accusing Louisvillians of bashing, etc, when it seems that it is these same people coming on here with false claims. All of my statements have been backed up by data. Now, let's keep this simple. Where is your objective proof?
As a disclaimer, I am a fan of most parts of KY, so I am not sure why I am being pegged otherwise. From Danville to Bardstown, Berea to Covington, and even Paducah, Pikeville, and Bowling Green, Kentucky has some nicer small towns. But they are just that, small towns!

Baby keep in mind not everyone on these boards are originally from Kentucky. Don't hate us all for words of a few.

I've never thought of it as being an us against them type of situation before, but I am sorry to say that, yes, I have noticed people from Louisville are different. They seem to have more of an uptight, unfriendly northern personalty versus a more friendly, down-to- earth southern personality as you find in most of the rest of Kentucky, especially in rural Kentucky. I hope you guys don't bombard me with hatred over saying these things. I'm a court reporter and almost all of us would much rather deal with Lexington attorneys than Louisville attorneys. Of course there are some nice Louisville attorneys, as well. However, for the most part, we try to avoid them because some of them aren't very nice and do have an arrogance about them, which is something you rarely see in Lexington attorneys and attorneys from other parts of the state. Judging by what some have said here, evidently this would be the attitude/personalities of a lot of people who live in the Louisville area.
As far as people from rural areas rarely going to Louisville, do a lot of people from Louisville travel to the rural areas of Kentucky? My guess would be more rural people go to Louisville than people from Louisville visit the rural areas.
As far as Louisville dishing out more money, etc., isn't that the American way - the bigger cities help out the smaller, rural areas; the richer people are supposed to help the poorer; the richer people pay more taxes, etc? I will tell you what I have tried to instill in my children. We could not do without the poorer, less accomplished people anymore than we could do without the richer, more successful people. We all play very important roles in making our country/state a great place to live. After all, who would be our garbage men, janitors, school bus drivers, baby-sitters, etc., if we were all educated, successful, rich people? If we were all very successful, rich people, it would not only be a disaster but it would probably be very boring. I guess what I'm trying to say is it takes all kinds of people to make up this world and it takes all kinds of different places to make it interesting. Try enjoying the diversity and seeing the good in all people, places and things, instead of turning up your noses as if you deserve more than others less fortunate than yourselves because there are many different reasons you have rural areas in this country that isn't the fault of the people who live in these areas...locations, for one thing.
If you no longer want to help keep up the rural areas of Kentucky, I guess we will all be leaving the rural areas and moving to the cities simply to survive. Then when we get there, I guess there will be a whole lot more crime in the cities because surely there will not be enough jobs for everyone. I could go on about the disaster it could become, but I'll shut up now. This just makes sense to me, but what do I know? I'm just a dumb hillbilly from rural eastern Kentucky and you guys are from the big city of Louisville, Kentucky.
My mother and father did live in Louisville for a long time and loved it. Both my father and my brother went to Louisville law school, but they were still both UK fans. Many people move to the rural areas of Kentucky because they do not want to raise their kids in the cities. I guess if we let our rural areas go more than we already do, these people would opt to move out of the state to states that have a greater appreciation of their rural areas. We need our rural areas of Kentucky much more than some of you obviously think. I just keep thinking of more and more reasons, but I will really shut up now.
One more thing. We go more to Lexington from this rural part of Kentucky simply because it's much closer.

Please do not worry, those of us who live in the rural areas of Ky do not hate Louisville. I have traveled there several times with my line of work and was treated very well. The only thing I have regretted about my trips to your beautiful city is that I never was able to take a carriage ride. But I will the next time I am there.

Louisville is Dirty
Louisville is simply misunderstood by the rest of the state. Having lived in Lexinginton for 2 years and Louisville 30, I consider Louisville to be a separate experience. The Louisville-metro are is noting compared to the rest of the state.
Personally, I consider Louisville a dirty dump. It is also has ridiculas traffic for its size and worst of all, the people are extremely rude.

Louisvillle is not a dump and yes there are rude people but they are NOT the majority. You claim you live in Lexington now and the traffic there is much worse than here. Nice try.

I will take Louisville anyday over Lexington. Nothing but big box stores on Nicholasville Rd and Hamburg Pavilion. Nothing in Lexington can compare to the Highlands,Eastern Parkway,Old Louisville,Clifton,Germantown...I can keep going. I'll take my hometown "dump" over Fayette County.
