Any other smaller towns besides Elizabethtown near Louisville?
I'm thinking of moving to Elizabethtown because it's a mid sized town and is close to Louisville. Are their any other small towns or communities that are closer?

E-town is 40 miles from Downtown- that's a pretty long commute.
La Grange/ Oldham and Shelbyville are also very nice, but a lot closer

Mt. Washington or La Grange would be my choices.

I am also looking for a 2 bedroom house for about 500 -600 a month. Think I'll have any hope of finding that in any of those places? If so how? Can't find much online.

I just rented a 2 bedroom in rural Oldham County for 825 (including utilities). Don't expect less for same quality in Oldham. There may be, but I don't know of any.
Oldham County has few pre-1980's built homes which typically rent for lower rates.
Bardstown isn't out of your reach, either.

Yes, but it's all on I65, so it is actually a very easy drive. A lot of folks do it everyday.

I'm beginning to think shepherdsville is the way to go. Seems to have lower rent. What do you guys think? I just don't want to live around alot of crime or traffic.By the way how is shepherdsville on crime?

Shelby County is a very nice area just east of Louisville. it's between Louisville and Frankfort. The main cities are Simpsonville, Shelbyville and Waddy. Waddy is the farthest east and therefore the farthest from Louisville. Shelbyville is in the middle and is about 25 miles from downtown Louisville and is a 30-40 minute morning rush hour commute to downtown, depending on which part of Shelbyville you live in and how far you are from I-64, the interstate. You can rent a two-bedroom apartment for about $600 to $700 in Shelbyville. We temporarily rented a three-bedroom home in Shelbyville for $900 while we were building a house. But you can find two-bedroom homes for about $100 to $200 less if you don't have pets. And apartments are a bit less than that.
Simpsonville doesn't have apartments that I can recall, but they will have some homes for rent.
Elizabethtown is much too far for a daily commute to Louisville. It's about 60 miles from Louisville. My dad lives there. It's a long drive. (And I'm from a much bigger metropolitan area so I'm used to long commutes. But Elizabethtown is really too far for a daily commute.)
Oldham County is a good option, but rents are higher there than Shelby County. You can look at the south end of Louisville. Rents are lower there. That includes PRP and the Dixie Highway area. But Shelbyville is MUCH nicer than those areas.
There is also Bullitt County, which has Mt. Washington, which is nice enough. It also include Shepardsville, but that's not as nice as Louisville or Shelbyville or Oldham County. Rents are lower there, though, if cost is a concern.

Well, let's see, there are small towns closer to Louisville, but that I wouldn't consider "nice." Those would be Radcliff, West Point, Shepherdsville, and Shelbyville (somewhat). (No offense to people that live in these towns, but I get the impression that they're run-down and that the home owners don't really take care of their properties, for the most part.) Plus, Radcliff has a lot of junk shops due to the presence of Fort Knox nearby and Shepherdsville is still in the 1970s in terms of managing local growth and race relations. Shelbyville used to be all nice but most of the city proper has become run-down and scroungy since the mid-1990s; most of the surrounding area in Shelby County is nice, however.
Now, there are plenty of towns close to Louisville where you can still find reasonably-priced housing in clean and safe communities and have an easier commute. These include La Grange and Oldham County in general; and, Brooks, Hillview, Pioneer Village and Mt. Washington in Bullitt County. You might also try (while these are stretching the limits) Campbellsburg in Henry County or Bedford in Trimble County, or Taylorsville or Elk Creek in Spencer County.
