No, I don't have to live in Lfield if we move back. I would be happy in Etown or BG. Love them both. I don't work in the private sector right now and would like to keep it that way. Got my fingers crossed for the new HR unit coming into Ft. Knox in the next year or so. I think that will be a great boost to the region when it happens.

My Old Ky Home
I am from a small town in Western Ky and I got married as a teen and we left here to find a better living which ended up being Chicago, it did us well and we had 2 boys and a girl and now 5 grandchildren. After 45 years I am now back in Ky retired and very happy to be home. I love Kentucky..

Return Ticket
I left Western Kentucky over 30 yrs ago for the Southwest. While I love the desert, open space, sunshine, pastels, and fearless winters, I've grown to feel a little alienated with the Hispanic explosion, which also is still charming, but has grown a bit too overwhelming upon occasion... not negative, just not me anymore.
I returned home in May, as I often do, to see family. The friendliness of home and Louisville flooded me along with a beautiful spring week. I was a little disappointed in the time warp that is Lexington, too, but maybe it's college days coming back with their ghosts. The Bluegrass and the physical area around Hopkinsville, Madisonville, and Owensboro and Evansville, as well, across the river are still stunning in a vaguely English way.
To move back is now on my mind, too. It will be hard to face the winters, humidity, and the fatness that's become a standard in so much of the country! But, I want to hear bluejays in winter, trees crying, grass bending, see apple blossoms flying, smell hushpuppies sizzling, and revive all those images that are dream-based in my historical memory. I can't bring them back, but I might bring them nearer.
People can do much worse than spend their lives in Kentucky.

jcm, I just sat here and read this thread all the way through. Just like every other comment you ever make, all you know how to do is run down this state I have called home since I was born 52 years ago. And it will continue to be my home until I'm buried in the LBL. I get a little tired of somebody running my home down over and over and over and over. I have always heard if things aren't right for you, change them or get the hell out! You say your neighbors there in lawrenceburg aren't friendly. Gee, with an attitude like yours I wonder why their not just beating your door down to be friendly!
Don't get me wrong. I hope you get your degrees and get a job in Houston or wherever you look. With your determination, it won't take you long to work your way up to having your own law firm. Go for it! But try to cut back on running this fine state in everything you post. Kentucky may not be for everybody, but this is my home and I'm damn proud of it!

Good post!!! I know I have had my share of negative posts, but when I imagine packing up my family and moving to another state, I get a bit sad. I really do like it here and guess what? No matter where you go, you can either love it or hate. It's whatever you make it out to be. Sure, KY doesn't have a ton of metro area's, but I am within a two hour or so drive from two pretty good one's. I guess I am simple. I enjoy my little 5 acres, walking the grounds with my loved one's or sitting on our porch swing, enjoying the fresh air blowing through our pine trees. Call me backwards, but I would rather be doing that than sitting my arse in traffic, breathing fumes.

Original Question - why returning if you left
Thought I'd add why I'm returning back to Kentucky after only being gone for a couple of years. I could write about Houston *looks up at forum title* but I think Houston has it's own thread.
I moved for job reasons of higher salary and after nearly 10 years in Louisville, it was time to see the big city and San Antonio was the destination. I had no particular reasons to leave Louisville (boss wasn't that great >> but) and the grass looked green on the other side of the fence. I also travel quite a bit for my job, most of it within the U.S. and usually 15-20 days a month I'm on the road and get a great chance to see many cities in our great country.
I'm eager to say that returning to Kentucky is greatly anticipated. I miss the greenery of the city/state, the tall trees, lack of snakes/critters, close ties to a smaller city feel, the uncongested roads, the non-construction roadways, and the ability to get somewhere in under an hour.
San Antonio is a great city but it's not Louisville/Kentucky. Rarely are there trees over 100' tall and unless it rains a lot, not a lot of greenery. You can't hike 'off-trail' due to rattlesnakes, fire ants and cactus. San Antonio has growth that is unmatched - 5,000 people a month are moving in. Businesses that go out of business are quickly demolished to build another building. They don't turn all Walmarts into bingo halls or flea markets. But with growth comes road construction and waiting in traffic is a reality. If you are moving, at all, consider yourself lucky. You convince your boss that you need to start work at 6:30am so you can get to work in under 40 minutes (vs. 90). You HAVE to be on the road by 4pm or else you might as well stay at work until 6.
Cost of living. Kentucky has wildly inexpensive utilities and cannot be appreciated enough. Water is expensive in Texas and $200 a month water bills are normal. Electricity is also expensive but natural gas is reasonable. Cable and trash pickup (WM is here too!) is similar in price.
Looking forward to returning to Kentucky.

He has chosen Houston as his next home.
Now that was a nice choice all things considered.
