Ike's effects
San Antonio got minimual winds and little rain from Ike. There was much more damage in Kentucky as a result of Ike than San Antonio. Weather works in unpredictable ways.

I have a cousin who is a sports writer and broadcaster in the DFW area. Sent him some pics from the area and he said we got it worse than Dallas.

We left for the job and haven't gone back but wish to. We lived in Murray, and I loved it, though I was only there for a year. My husband was born and raised there, so it was a return "home" for him. We've since been to Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and now New Mexico. We'd love to be back in Murray where people know what Southern Hospitality is and where there are trees.

Well, I was born and raised in Bowling Green until about the age of 16. I grew up at Regency and anyone who knows Bowling Green knows Regency wasn't a pleasant/safe place to grow up back then. It is a small town and I always seen it that way no matter what but everybody that I grew up with and who hung out at Regency at that time was pretty crazy. A lot of drugs and crap. At the age of 16 I was able to drive legally. My grandfather and uncle decided to give me a car they had so I could get around and do whatever I needed to get done.
As soon as I started driving I was so excited to go to other places I haven't been because I was sick and tired of Bowling Green. I drove to places like Nashville, Louisville and Cincinnati at first because they were the closest big cities to my area. I enjoyed visiting and seeing different faces and just being able to go some where for a while without all the "friendly faces" that were back home.
The biggest thing I enjoyed was being able to walk around and go places. That seemed really cool to me at the time because even in Bowling Green I would park my car at a friends house or something in Skyline or some other place and just start walking around. Everyone thought I was strange for this but I loved it. I always rode my bicycle around with my best friends at Regency and we would ride to places all over Bowling Green. We would go to Three Springs and play, Greenwood Mall, or even take an adventurous ride out to Alvaton on Claypool Boyce or something.
I finally turned 18 and I got into a car accident after getting a job at Greenwood Ford. I was so upset and pissed off because now I had to worry about having a car and no transportation. Try impressing a girl in a small town with no car is impossible. They are bread to like the "fancy cars".... whatever though! So, I purchased a bike at Nat's, drove my mothers car to Louisville to check out some apartments and do an interview. While I was there I signed the lease and got the job. I was excited to leave and haven't been back from that day.
I had lived in Louisville, Nashville, Atlanta, and now in Chicago where I will stay for the rest of my life. There is quit a twist to my little adventures though. I came back home for Christmas last year and while I was there I met someone who I am now engaged to be married with. I have had some bad relationships that didn't go well at all and it was strange to come back home after so long and find the girl of my dreams. She is now living with me in Chicago and we are both very happy here. Things I do not miss about living in Kentucky or the south in genereal are the heat, no public transportation worth using because everything things your a bum if you use it and I am far from a bum, and just the general though process of people. I was quit surprised to see the woman I am in love with enjoy all the things I do about living in a place like Chicago. We plan on raising a family here and we are very happy.
I am not going to bash Kentucky because of my experiences because I could bash and bash and no one will see my point of view anyway so I find it useless. If you enjoy Kentucky then stay but if your not happy just remember there are plenty of places outside of Kentucky one can live. Kentucky isn't everything. Get out and enjoy life!

Maybe you missed the very beginning of my post? You can feel negative all you want about any place you want. I expressed my opinion of the place from actually growing up there and having plenty of experience with the people and life-style. I am content with my post. Not every place is for everyone and that is the case with me. I didn't go off bashing Kentucky, which I could, and you would know how I feel about doing that if you would have actually read my post. Enjoy Kentucky because it is the place for you and if you feel the need to take comments from a "Internet Chat Forum" personal then by all means go ahead. If you don't like Chicago and/or my post... who cares? Enjoy your day!

I went to college in KY, got married, lived there a couple more years, I left b/c I got a divorce, moved back to IN.
It's a nice place no doubt, I wouldn't be against retiring somewhere like Murray, I had a great time while I was there.... I hear it is a popular retirement spot too.

I'm a native Chicagoan, born and spent my childhood in the city, the northwest side, and a year in the western suburbs (DuPage County).
When I was about to enter my teens my fathers place closed down and he was offered a transfer to near Seattle, San Diego, or Louisville. He chose Louisville as it was closest to Chicago (where all his familiy was) and my mother had kin in Louisville, my parents were somewhat familiar with the place.
and the people are not as ignorant as they are made out to be.
At first they didnt like it. But for me I loved it, loved Louisville (or my little corner of it, Valley Station) and Kentucky in general. After a while my parents became more assimilated into Louisville (and Louisville itself, the people, became more cosmopolitan and wordly, too). We used to go out in the state quite a bit for little vacations, at first camping, then at the state resort parks.
Unfortunatly for me, when I graduated from college there was no work in my field in Louisville or KY (this was that early 1980s recession which was a bad one, like this one). So I moved to back to Chicago and found work there, and then was offered a job in California, where I lived for a few years.
But I was always homesick for Kentucky, wanted to move back. Fortunatly I was offered a promotion and transfer to Dayton, Ohio, which is quite close to Kentucky (about 2.5 hrs from Louisville), so I took it to move closer to Kentucky. I don't live in Ohio because I like Ohio. I live here because its close to my (adopted) old Kentucky home.
So the economic situation took me away, and having a fairly good job kept me away, but not too far away. I like being close to my family..my parents, sister, brother in law, and nieces and nephews. Family ties, but i just like Kentucky as a place and as a culture.
