You're not missing much. They are backwards... definitely have some of the worst schools in the country, and the most corrupt politicians are from Illinois.

I could say I'm not missing much in Kentucky... couldn't I? Kentucky doesn't have bad schools and corrupt politicians do they? Of course they don't. Kentucky is God's gift to all his followers! Bless your heart

I think both of you are the ones with "issues". Most of the people discussing Chicago here are native Kentuckians who have relocated to Chicago. The one native Chicagoan posting here...me....had positive things to say about the Commonwealth.

I think you both are reflecting your own personal prejudices against and stereotypes about this city. This thread could be about Kentucky and why people leave, stay, or return, rather than the pros and cons of the Windy City. But you both, everyone, should be more open minded about places and the people who live them.

I grew up on a farm in rural Ky. Even as a kid I knew there was a better life than that. After HS I moved to florida, lived there a year and then joined the navy and saw the world.

I do miss Ky sometimes, and I do go back and visit family and friends. I would never live there again though.

If you're just graduating college and have the guts to move, then do it! I was raised in Western Kentucky and went to school at Murray State. I've never felt quite right in KY. Too religious, too conservative, too boring. I got tons of dirty looks and snide remarks when telling people I wanted to leave, to explore and live in a city (Louisville is not a big city, though everyone in KY claims it's the end-all of culture and diversity). After I had my degree, I packed up my car and moved to LA. Though I don't think LA is somehwere I'd ever settle down or raise kids, it's opened my eyes up to new cultures, new foods, and a totally different lifestyle.

I do have a love-hate relationship with KY. I miss the beautful land and, of course, rain and seasons. The people are friendlier (unless you tell them you don't go to church) and the cost of living is amazing, but going home just reminds me of how isolated the people are. After a week I'm ready to return to the city -- where I can see an independent film without driving an hour or get to know people from China, Honduras or Italy.

You're young, so go out and explore. Don't be afraid. It's better to try and fail (or realize you miss KY) than to realize later in life you missed a great opportunity to get out and see if there is anything better out there.

Everything you said is true. Kentuckians can be clannish and narrow-minded. Religion is a huge factor in how you are viewed. It's very refreshing to hear from someone who was raised in Kentucky but has gone elsewhere to live and can attest to the opportunities that are available out there. Cheers to you!

MegHall, I think you're experiencing "the grass is always greener" syndrome. I move to Kentucky FROM Los Angeles... and am as happy as can be (in reality). LA is in ruins from all the liberals. Shame... it used to be so cool. Now it's all about drugs, crime and illegals. The good vibes from the 80's are all gone.

I am guessing that you didn't live in Lexington because here we can see an independent film & people from foreign lands without driving an hour. But what good is that? The independent films I've seen have been worse than the garbage Hollywood churns out. I didn't think that was possible(!). But I will agree with you on one matter - the state can get boring sometimes. Fortunately Vegas is just an airplane away. This is the American dream - living with the saints... the sinners (ala Vegas) are only fun for a little while, in small doses.

What a bizarre thing to say. Where you get that I don't know. I'm thinking it's because you're young I bet?

Clannish?

Well, I spent my youth overseas, my child-rearing years in Washington, DC, a couple of years in Orange County, California after that -- and now I'm fine without all that "culture" -- pleasant vistas, affordability, community and people who love the Lord are what I want now.

Ha, I wish I was young again! Bizarre as it may seem to you, I absolutely meant what I said.

Def of clannish:
[adj] befitting or characteristic of those who inclined to social exclusiveness and who rebuff the advances of people considered inferior
