Moving to the Pikeville area
My family and I may be moving to the Pikeville area very soon.
We'll be comming down from PA for the first time this weekend.....is there anything we should make sure to see or do while we're there?
I'd love to hear ideas from anyone who lives in this area.
Thanks so much!

We'll...I love Pikeville. Everyone that I have ever met there is super nice. But..I will tell you a few things about the area. There are not many neighborhoods so to speak. Lots of mountains and down home people. Pikeville is in the mountains and brings a true sense to the phrase "eastern Kentucky". There are not really any shopping (that I am aware of) and keep in mind it is an area of Kentucky that is known for its coal mines. I live in Lexington and my first time to Pikeville was very shocking to me the first time I visited. I must say my honest opinion is that you should be prepared to see some parts that consist of a lot of trailors and lower income living. I have been told by many that are from there that there is almost a great divide. You either have a ton of money, or none at all. I don't mean to sound negative. Like I said some of the greatest people I have ever met are from there and every time I have ever visited I had a blast. But..it's just a different way of life. Maybe it's for you! I don't know what you are looking for...but enjoy your trip!

Why would you move to Pikeville? Eastern Kentucky is beautiful and there are better places to live there than Pikeville.

Hi, animallvr..I live here in Pikeville, by choice, because I have been there and done that in the cities..I hope you will take a look at some of the links I am providing..Pikeville is not the backward, drug infested poor white trash town that has been described in so many places on this forum by people who have never lived here, visited here or even driven through here ..I have no trouble finding a place to shop, be entertained, get an education, or top medical treatment, and most of all have no trouble finding a good friendly neighbor to feed the dog while I am gone ..As far as jobs..There are jobs here. Our hospital employes about 2000 people, the board of education is a huge employer also..There are all kinds of high tech jobs in and around the coal mining industry ( yes that is exactly what I said folks) It takes a pretty good education to be a modern coal miner. There are many jobs available in retail and fast food outlets ( yep, we even have super Walmart, Lowes, Sears, Penneys, Applebees and McDonalds among lots of others out here in the boonies)I hope you enjoy your trip here and hope someone will be showing you around..There are several subdivisions atop the mountains surrounding town that have been developed from reclaimation that are beautiful
www.pikecountychamberofcommerce.org (broken link) Please follow the links provided there to find information on our festivals, our Expo Center, housing, etc..Springtime is coming and the redbud will turn these mountains into something spectacular and beautiful..

The only time I have ever been nervous in my life driving in an area was in the eastern kentucky/ pikeville area. I had a friend of mine get pulled over for speeding and had his kentucky basketball tickets "taken" from him. He was from northern kentucky and stuck out I guess but he couldn't get out of there fast enough. I apologize to all the good people in the pikeville area as I am sure there are plenty. All I will say is that sterotypes usually do exist for a reason..they were born from some bit of reality. While pikeville is a nice place it certainly has more than it's share of the other side as well. I don't think people just made up the drugs and trailers to be mean...it is a reality. There is some attorney on a billboard all over eastern kentucky that is loathed by doctors everywhere because he goes after goofy lawsuits that no jury in the state would ever give a favorable verdict to except for the eastern kentucky folk that for one reason or another are out to get the man and take em for whatever they can. Ask any attorney where will you get a favorable verdict for malpractice or a suit against a drug company....eastern kentucky.

I've never been to Pikeville and Pike County itself, so I can't make judgments about it. I've heard that in that far eastern part of the state, Pikeville is the place to live: nice and clean downtown, good public schools, Pikeville College, Pikeville Coll. School of Osteopathic Medicine (one of only 12 or so in the country,) beautiful mountains, a 6000+ seat civic center, Wal-Mart, Lowe's, and Applebee's. (Oh, "good public schools" is a relative term, because in my mind the only good public schools in the state are in the Jefferson Co., Oldham Co., and Ft. Thomas systems.) Anywho, eastern Ky. isn't my cup of tea, as the culture is waaaaaay too "countrified" and cultural progression seems to be 25-30 years behind the times. But that's just my take. You may get there and love it.

What do you mean?
Pikeville is probably the best town in Eastern Kentucky to live for someone who is not originally from the area.
What other Eastern Ky towns would you suggest?

Come and see for yourself what Pikeville is like..I think if you enjoy the small town lifestyle with friendly people, great schools, hospital, new four lane highways in all directions, then you're gonna love it.."HillbillyDays" a festival in April soponsored by local Shriners has grown to include "Outhouse Clans " from all over the States and Canada..The proceeds go to the Shriners Childrens Hospitals..Lots of people who have never been here make fun of the stereotyped "hillbilly" so we have found a way to make the sweetest lemonade out of it with this festival for the precious children who never have to worry about paying a cent at the hospitals
