Dude, they split off from Virginia during the Civil War in order to stay with the Union! That made them the only Union state to be formed by seceding from a Confederate state. It's at least arguable that they are a border state, but their origin makes them a northern state in my estimation. Caveat: the census bureau considers WV a southern state because most of it is below the Mason Dixon line. West Virginia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia But I have a rule. Any state less than 150 miles from Canada cannot be considered a southern state!

Off Topic, I think you were very unkind to my fellow West Virginian. I would have warned him before he started this thread that you should never go to another Southerner to verify one's own "Southernness". There is nothing another Southerner loves more than telling another Southerner that he/she is not "Southern". I only have to point to a certain thread on the General U.S. page, where a Texan and a Louisianan are telling each other that they are not Southern. I read with interest your responses to Missymom's (hey Missymom!) thread "Is This True". Since you say you are an historian, I would like to correct some wrong impressions you have of West Virginia's origins. You are quite correct that Kentucky did not have a Secession referendum, but (West) Virginia did, and here is the result.

As you see, most of West Virginia voted for Secession. I would also refer you to a West Virginia Archives and History page where they admit that the numbers of Confederate & Union soldiers from West Virginia were about equal. " Although early estimates noted that Union soldiers from the region outnumbered Confederates by more than three to one, more recent and detailed studies have concluded that there were nearly equal numbers of Union and Confederate soldiers.."
Researching Your Civil War Ancestor If I recall correctly, Kentucky gave about 30% to the Confederacy, West Virginia gave 50%. West Virginia was created in Washington, DC, the people of the state had little hand in it.
And as far as Canada is concerned, Canada is an easier drive from Dayton, KY, than any part of West Virginia.
I do not wish to offend any Kentuckians, as my family has an intimate history with KY, as Missymom knows, and I do not impugn any Southernness of Kentucky. I only wish to distinguish myth from history regarding West Virginia, the most put-upon state in the Union. My best regards, Bobilee
