Thank you all so much for your input! I appreciate it so much! We're coming over to KY to look this Fri/Sat. We've got a realtor and she's found us several homes to look at. I had to laugh, been a lonnnnng time since I'd seen named subdivisions. (Can you tell we live outside the city?!?)
Oh, I'm not offended in any way by the comment by RuralGuy! Like someone said, Christ was and is very controversial. We are not shy about what we believe, and are not offended by another's beliefs. That's what makes our country great - freedom of speech & religion; I do, however, get offended when people are not allowed to voice their opinion in a reasonable manner, no matter how "far off" I think it is. (Explanation? We've been a military family and my son is now a US Marine and we've seen/heard alllll sorts of things that make me wonder why those people live in America, LOL!) Anyways, I digress... Thank you all so much for your valuable information.
Two things: Taxes? Are there differing rates depending on where you live? I've seen different comments about "low taxes" in Boone Co. Comments? Opinions?
What can you tell me about these areas:
Erlanger...
Jacqueline Heights
Cherry Hill
Cardinal Court
Elsmere
South Erlanger
Turkeyfoot Acres
Fairview Elsmere
Lexington Shopping P (I'm guessing "Plaza"??)
Florence
Town & Country
Hunter Green
Orchard Acres
Burlington
Strawberry Hill
Covington
Bahama Garden
Independence
Plantation Heights

Hi again, forgot to mention fairview... blink your eye, and its gone.. very small quiet town.. nice area to live in. Florence, big city appeal.. , Erlanger/Elsemere also small towns, but decent. Each city has a different tax rate for their city.. Boone county rural might be low, but Florence is a city within Boone county and the taxes are higher..

What information do you wish you'd known prior to moving to KY; that would have made a difference to you (good or bad)? What info would you offer a family with younger children? (our oldest is currently a US Marine and the others are 9, 8 & 3) We homeschool, so schools are not an issue right now.
Even if you did not home school, Covington Latin is quite possibly Kentucky's very best private school; the N. Ky. Catholic School system is excellent, too. Boone County, Erlanger-Elsmere, Walton-Verona, and Ft. Thomas are among Ky.'s very best public school systems.
N. Ky. is practically the most conservative region in an already conservative state. I'm sure your new neighbors will help make your Marine child feel welcome when he comes home.
My biggest concern is flooding, crime - any areas to stay away from? Any areas to check out first? A lot of the things we'll take into consideration are: we have one vehicle, we're on one income, churches in the area, family-friendliness... I'm sure I'm leaving some thing out, but maybe you can help us out!
Flooding: Certain areas of Constance, Bromley, Ludlow, Covington, Dayton, etc.--towns RIGHT on the Ohio River--may flood "once in a blue moon." Seriously, I think the last time NKY's river towns experienced a catastrophic flood was in 1937! Some low lying areas right on the river's banks experience crest peaking about every 5-10 years with the last major occurrence in 1997. Mind you, all this is only about 1% of the N. Ky. region, at worst; the rest of it sits on bluffs overlooking the river valley.
Crime: very low in NKY! Some parts of Covington (E. of I-75 and b/t 5th and 20th Sts.) and Newport (within a 3-4 block radius of Monmouth St. south of the peace bell) have sketchy blocks with small Section 8 projects. Newport had I think only one murder in all of 2007, signifying an ever-decreasing crime rate from the 1990s and a murder rate of 5.9/100K people. Covington had something like six in 2007, bringing the murder rate there t 14.8/100K. But yeah, you should feel very safe in 99% of NKY.
One vehicle: Hmmmm... Where in Virginia are you moving here from? TANK (Transit Authority of N. KY.) and, on the Ohio side, SORTA buses have nice, extensive systems, but may not take you out to places like the Creation Museum or the farthest reaches of suburban N. Ky., like Walton, Grants Lick, or Big Bone Lick. Just understand that NKY is VERY car dependent and you may just have to suck it up, save some money, and buy a $3000 Honda Civic.
Churches: a LOT of Catholic and Southern Baptist Churches, but there is one I'm sure to fit many denominations and tastes.
Blessings,
Cheryl

Answers above in red.
NKY is a very welcoming region with great architecture, food, and immediate access to Cincinnati, which is one of America's most beautiful and educated cities. I intend to move to Texas ASAP, but if I was to stay/return to this region, it would NOT be rural Ky. where I live now. It would be Greater Cincinnati/NKY.
Good luck!

LOL, I love that these days you gotta be a "liberal" to know that that museum is a den of ignorance & is a huge black eye to the area from the perspective of the rest of the country & the entire world in general. Only in KY would something like this fly. Its actually an embarrassment for the entire state & makes us all look like religious cooks Im sorry to say.
Im not trying to offend anyone, but you'd really have to completely reject everything we've learned about history to believe a word of anything that place is trying to sell. I mean, its fine if you're going for a laugh or maybe looking at it from an alternate "what it would look like if things would have actually happened this way" perspective. But people didnt coexist with dinosaurs & Im pretty sure the Earth is older than 6000 years, call me crazy. These are all based on these things we call facts. Something the religious books never deliver on.
Point being, they're just stories, people. Stop taking everything so literally & losing perspective on reality.

It honestly sounds like you just have a problem with people expressing their beliefs. Some believe in evolution, some in creation. Pretty much every science museum shows only the politically correct view (that we evolved). I see no problem at all with showcasing creation. No one is forcing you to take a tour of the museum.

a) I disagree that the Bible is just stories, but
b) even if your premise is right, it is fine to have a venue to showcase these "stories." There are museums to Norse mythology, and Greek myths, why not allow a museum that showcases what 75% of Americans believe?
Perhaps you don't like it, so don't go!
Congrats on your husbands job, it sounds like it will be the job of a lifetime! Disregard what KerryB said, and be proud of your faith! I lived in Montreal, Canada for 12 years, and people did not want to hear it, but a few did, and a few are saved now! Be proud of your beliefs no matter where you are! (Not that I think you aren't already )
