My wife retires from Government work in 4 or 5 yrs. We both logged on to ****.com to see what would be good in Kentucky because it seems to be a good state on retirement taxes (I don't think we plan to retire for at least 10-12 yrs). Anyway I came up with places like Louisville and Lexington and she came up with places like Berea, Hopkinsville and Murray. I'll be looking for a job at a hospital (medical record professional), she'll want to teach maybe at a Christian school and she also wants to find Mayberry, which I think may be too small. I'm thinking outlying areas of Louisville or Lexington may be good. Want to be close to grocery shopping and culture but not gridlocked like we are in Maryland now. Looking for that famous southern hospitality.
Those are all good areas. I'm not so sure about Hopkinsville however. Berea would be close to Lexington and it's in one of the fastest growing counties in the state. I think all the counties around Lexington are good places to live but prefer Scott County, north of Lexington.
Hopkinsville has a great hospital that just went through some major reconstruction and additions. There is also a good christian school on the edge of town.
What about taxes. I understand some retirement income is not taxed. Also read on another post that Kentuckyians are "taxed to death", but on the Tax Foundation website you're ranked close to Tennesee, which is another state I'm considering.
You should think about Bowling Green. It's a great college town, small but not too small. The cost of living and job situation is great, lots of things to do and see. Close to Nashville for a big city. Everyone is friendly, because so many of the people here have relocated from somewhere else. We have been here for about five months from Florida. We are so glad to be away from the hustle and bustle of a big city, I do feel like we found our Mayberry! Good luck to you all..........
Elizabethtown would also fit your criteria. Hardin Memorial Hospital is a regional medical center, and there are several christian schools in the county as well. Close to Louisville and not too far from Lexington, so plenty of city culture available if desired. Take a look!
