Smile Grew up in Murray

My husband and I both grew up in Murray, and we are very fond of the town. We are now in our 40s and live elsewhere in Ky, but we have family there, including a niece at Murray High.

Drawbacks: In the backend of nowhere, it's small and everyone knows your business, if you aren't "from" there it can be hard to get to know people (being in school helps a lot).

Benefits: The lakes (beautiful and lots of recreation area), it's small and you can pretty much go anywhere and be safe, the university is a great school and offers a lot of opportunity for all ages in the community (it's very community oriented), people are very friendly once you get to know them.

There are two school districts: Murray and Calloway Co., and the rivalry is of course a big deal. My siblings all went to Calloway and did sports and band; I went to Murray and did band (which is a very, very big deal at Murray - former national champions). Both school districts are top notch in terms of education, and I can say that having been a high school teacher.

Personally, I loved it, and now that I have young children I regret that they do not have some of the things I had growing up. They have plenty of cultural experiences I didn't get, but on the other hand they have no freedom to speak of. I could go almost anywhere anytime safely ... and as much as things change over the years, that's still true in Murray. Give it a chance, and try not to judge too harshly if you're from a larger area. You may like it a lot!
