The Paducah area
Hello Everyone. This is my first post. I'm moving to Paducah from Los Angeles, California to attend college and just to get out of the state and see something new. The violence here is horrible and it's just too much. Bad place to raise kids. I hear that Kentucky is beautiful and the cost of living is really cheap compared to California. Can anyone tell me the price range of renting a 1 bedroom apartment or if you know a landlord who's renting that would be great. Anywhere from $200-$400 a month would be nice. I prefer something near the river just not so far out. Also, what are the pros and cons of Paducah. I did a lot of research but I want someones else point of view. Also, do the landlords in Paducah check your credit. I just turned 23. My credit isn't good but I think there's a way around that. With my credit being bad will that mean I'll have to put more money down for the deposit. I have no criminal background. This will be my first apartment by the way. Also, is there a lot of racism in the area. I'm biracial, hope that's not a problem. I love the look of Paducah it looks really nice and the river front looks absolutely beautiful. If anyone could give me some info that would be awesome.

$200-$400 is cutting it pretty close for a decent place near the river. I do not know anyone in Paducah with property available, but I will ask some landlords I know there if they know of anything. $400+ might be a more realistic number, depending on your needs and requirements of a neighborhood.
Otherwise check with a Paducah Realtor and many of them manage property.
Hope this helps.

It doesn't have to be right on the river, it can be like 2-5 miles out. I know there's a few apartment complexes near Carson Park that I think would be perfect. Yes please try to talk to some landlords. I don't care much for the neighborhood, I just want something decent for a very good price. If you hear anything let me know i'd really appreciate it. Thanks for the reply.

If you don't mind Illinois, there are apartments in Metropolis close to the river for $325-375. It's 10 minutes across the bridge to Paducah.
Be advised, Paducah's riverfront is obscured with a flood wall. Metropolis is on high ground, no flood wall required, and has a large State Park along the riverfront.

And you don't have to pay KY income taxes. Wait...Illinois may have an income tax too...I dunno.

IL has an income tax. The vehicle tax is the main difference I've found. In KY, don't you have to pay a property tax on cars every year? In IL, we pay a straight $78 registration fee every year.
There's no city taxes in Metropolis, nor parking meters etc. Casino throws off more than enough tax dollars.

Oh yes!!! Car tax every year based on the current value of your vehicle. We just bought a new Jeep and I just can't wait until that big $400 tax bill rolls in next year.

Don't cut it too close on finding an apartment. There was a story in the Paducah Sun recently about a shortage of apartments in the Paducah area. For whatever reason apartments are dealing with waiting lists for new tenants.

Actually if you are going to college, Paducah Community College has several compplexes located within walking distance and are used mainly by students. Rent varies. this is approximatly 10 miles from downtown. Or right now because Paducah is redoing its Lowertown and trying to pull in homeowners you can get a good deal on a fixer upper. I know a great realtor that I can put you in touch with. She also owns rental property. As for apartments there are several apartments for rent. Soem do have waiting lists but because our population is dwindling there are plenty of spaces avalible you just have to look for them.
