I know I haven't been on here alot as of late, but I want you to know I have been following your progress. I also want to say "thank you" one more time for all of the heartfelt advice you gave me even though I am not going to be taking advantage of it at this time. I still hope to end up in Ky though I cannot say for sure when that may be. Either way, enjoy your new home, best wishes to you and Donna and God bless you both.

Hi Steve...Thanx for those nice comments. Generally we had a good mover, but found several damaged goods & they failed to hook up the washer & dryer. Other than that, things went relatively well. We were covered by a damage waiver we got prior to the move, so we will be reimbursed.
The previous owner allowed Donna & I to move in on Sat, two days before the closing ! Can't recall that ever happening before. He also took us to all the Utilities to get things switched over into our names, & to Farm Bureau to get our Home Owners Insurance set-up. Even took us to see where the local dump was. I thought that was funny. Then to top things off, he & his wife treated us to Lunch. They are simply good people.
I'm really sorry you won't be coming here soon. I was looking forward to meeting you in person. Hopefully in the not too distant future, we'll finally get to meet.
We have been diligently unpacking all the boxes ( 150) & putting all the clothes & food & everything in their proper place. We still don't have a fridge & stove, but ordered them from Lowes in Richmond yesterday. I also bought a Lawn Tractor & a Weed Whacker....Everything will be delivered this next Wednesday.
I installed blinds on all the windows & Donna has put up all the curtains and drapes, & the house is slowly starting to look like 'home'. Got the phone hooked up as well as the cable & Internet Service. Everyone we've come in contact with here in KY has just been fantastic to us. I know we made the right move.
God has really blessed us, & whenever there was even a hint of something going wrong, he must have stepped in & made sure all was well.
Take care Steve, & keep in touch. Send me an email or PM from time to time to let me know how things are going with you, OK?
God Bless.

Welcome Home, Joe, leave room for me!
Hello Joe, et. al.
Congrats on your move; I was there in KY while you were closing on your new home!
We got there on Sunday, Apr. 29, and stayed at the Singing Hills Inn B&B in Renfro Valley. Here's a plug, great place to stay, and they have a 1 BR apartment that they rent out as well, which suited us perfectly for our odd hours and in & out while househunting. They also have a KENNEL for the dogs you may travel with, which was a real lifesaver for us!
Anyway, driving around Mount Vernon Sunday, I had a panic attack. I thought I could move to the small town, but freaked out....I can't! I can't! Wait, don't jump on me yet....Went grocery shopping that evening at the IGA and found prices to be higher than I'm used to, and that was quite unexpected. BUT, small town, small store, that's all.
Monday, my sweetie took me to Somerset, and I got my feet back under me. As long as I know Somerset is right down the road, I'll be OK. I talked with the owner of the H&R Block franchise, and I'm looking forward to joining the team next tax season. There was also a K-Mart, Kroger, and an active Chamber of Commerce. I'll be fine!
Actually put an offer on a house on Cox's Knob (the 2nd highest point in the county) at the NW edge of Pulaski County, but it was rejected. I'm not overwhelmed with grief; there's plenty in the area for me. We went to an auction Saturday morning, and an incredible 100-year-old brick two-story with 6 bedrooms, etc. sold for $70,000! Now the new plan is to sell the house in FL, move to KY this summer, rent for a month or two (maybe even back at Singing Hills Inn) and I am certain we'll find our home, either through our realtor or auction.
Right now, I'm packing, because I can't get there soon enough!
So leave room for me!

Thanx for all the info, Kitty. It was interesting re the B&B in Renfro Valley. We were just notified our cousins back in Florida have just put their house up for sale, & will be moving close to us in the Madison/Jackson County area. That place would be great for them to stay when they come up here looking for homes.
I hope they sell their house quickly. It is right on the Golf Course in High Point in Brooksville,FL.....so it is in a desirable location. It would be nice to have some kin close by. I personally think it may be too late in the year, what with Hurricane season coming up.....but who knows, it just may sell quickly. Neither they nor ourselves experienced any damage from hurricanes in all the years we lived there, so it may prove to be a non-factor.
I really got a kick out of your 'panic-attack' episide. LMAO. It IS a little culture shock upon moving here, but everyone we meet has been absolutely great to us both. Everyone wants to help us out. Our only regret is that we should have made this move sooner.
Virtually everyone we meet the first time ask us if we've found a Church yet, or ask what Church we attend. I find that rather refreshing.
I put up a Hummingbird feeder in the front yard, & within minutes, had 7 tiny lil' hummingbirds fighting over the nectar. They completely emptied the bottle in 1 1/2 days. I had to buy another feeder with a bigger bottle to set up additionaly. We just love it here.
Good luck to you in all your endeavors & keep us all posted on your experiences, OK?
God bless.

My sweetie, who moved here to FL from KY, says you get three questions: 1) What church do you attend? 2) Who's your kin? 3) What's your tobacco base?

Kitty...Well, I've only been asked the Church question...not the other 2. What I can't get over is the way complete strangers have treated us.
The neighbor to the left of me was having a small fence put up & I got to talking to the fence company owner. Told him my garden tractor was to be delivered the next day, & he tells me if it's not delivered, to come over his house....across the holler, & borrow his ! It's like that everywhere we go.
I don't know if these are isolated cases, but we are sure lovin' it.
The only negative thing we've learned is NOT to go to Wal-Mart on a Friday evening....Sheer madness. Only 1 way in & 1 way out....who in the world could have OK'd that proposition?
All the neighbors have been great also. The kids of the neighborhood like to come over & talk to 'Gramma Donna' & 'Grampa Joe'.....we make them laugh & they are all so polite....good upbringing.
I love the laid back pace of life, the beautiful views we see everyday & the sincere freindliness of the people. Most can't believe we moved from Florida to Kentucky. They will say, "Why would you do that?" Our reply almost startles them when we say because of the sheer beauty of the land & the great people. Quite often, many people don't realize what they have as they have only lived in one area all their lives. Florida had it's good points, but they were few and far between. I lived there for almost 18 years & it just got progressively worse...especially the last 5 years. WE don't miss it 1 bit !
Take care. God Bless.

Congrats, Joe!
I found this track a month or two ago, when we were first starting to look at KY as a future home. I'm glad to hear you found your place! Maybe we'll be neighbors. . .
James and I will be making our shopping trip in just about a week-arriving Friday and staying through Sunday.
I was born in KY, Mom's family's all from those parts, but Dad was in the Army so we didn't stay long. James grew up on the other side of the hills south of Roanoke. We started looking for property for our retirement home in the Piedmont region, to be closer to his kin and my brothers who live near DC, but haven't found anything that calls to us.
On a whim, I started looking in KY, found Berea and this community and got serious about searching. With "subtle persuasion" I've moved our shopping trip up from August.

It was nice to hear from you, Mary. Good luck to you in your search for a place. As you may have read on this thread, all my searchong was initially in Madison County, but God led us to Sand Gap in Jackson County.
It is so beautiful here...just outside Daniel Boone Nat'l. Forest. The people have been great to us both. We don't have any kin at all in KY, but Donna's cousin & wife have put their house up for sale in Florida & want to move somewhere in the Madison/Jackson County area near us.
Every day we thank The Lord for bringing us here. Went to McKee today to get KY license plates, a KY drivers license & car insurance. We were surprised that car insurance was higher than in Florida. No long lines...as a matter of fact....no lines at all. Made 3-4 more friends while there at the courthouse & at Farm Bureau.
Keep us informed how your search progresses.
God Bless.

Joe, I'm not sure how, but we need to change this thread because neither of us ended up in Berea! (Also not totally sure how to quote you, but let's see if this worked!)
The house I had bid on before that was turned down, showed up again on MLS and they dropped the price. Don't know why they didn't counter. Anyway, I waited a couple weeks, then put another bid. The realtor just called and said they are thinking about it and will give an answer tomorrow. I'm packing. Whether it's that house or a different one, I'm coming to KY for good before Labor Day. I'm frantically trying to get this house in shape to show....it's not on the market yet!

Kitty, you did OK quoting me. Donna & I went through almost the same thing regarding homes supossedly being sold, but still being listed as 'active' in the ads. Even our house, which we bought on Feb. 27th. was still listed as being 'active' right up to our closing date of April 3oth ! Go Figure.
Hope your house sells quickly. Got a late night call Friday that Donnas cousin in FL has a party from Illinois possibly interested in their house & they just put it up for sale last Sat. They are excited about moving nearby us here in KY.
Gas here has just gone over $3.00/gal. I'd never thought I'd see this day. I'm 66 yrs. old & can vividly remember when gas was around 25 cents a gal.
We just may get rid of one car to make it easier on us financially.
Good luck. Take care. God Bless.

Jumping in on this conversation... we lived in Ohio retired to Florida and now are back in KY looking at the Berea/Richmond area homes. Utilities are very confusing! Everyone tells us KU electric is the best (cheapest) but finding a home with it available has not been successful. Does anyone know about Bluegrass RECC or Clark RECC utilities? or Delta Gas?
Sure hope someone can give us some insight! Joe, your journey certainly sounds successful and encouraging.
