We've decided that Western Ky is an area we'd consider moving to in the next 2-4 years. Husband can retire but will probably get a job of some sort to keep him busy. I'll probably have to work to make $$$.
We don't have children so schools aren't an issue. Here's what we'd like. 100+/- acres for hunting, farming (hay) and horses. It can have a house or we can build if the land is cheap enough. I'm guessing the budget will be around 300-450k. We visited the KY Lakes area, Madisonville and several other towns two years ago looking at property. I thought the town of Madisonville was pretty nice. So what areas/towns should we be looking at? Any to stay away from? Thanks! BTW - We're coming from MD. |

Possibly the owensboro area but I really wouldn't wish that on anyone. All in all it is an ok place but it feels very isolated but maybe you like that. Possibly out the Maceo way. I"m not sure what land costs around there but there is a lot of it. Owensboro has most of what you would need but if you want some more variety of things you will need to go to evansville or louisville such as stores and resteraunts. Would you like some sweet tea?

How did you like the Ky Lake/ Lake Barkley area? You might be able to find a nice bit of farm like you are wanting, in Crittenden or Caldwell Counties. You'd have nice proximity to the lakes and Ohio River. You would be about an hour from Paducah or Madisonville. The people are nice down that way.

I really think the smartest thing to do would be to rent a house in whatever area for 6 months to make sure we like it. |

You can certainly find a decent resteraunt in owensboro...just not a wide variety that's all. For more variety you will have to head to louisville or evansville (which is a discrace for a city the size of owensboro. They need to update a bit. One would think they are sick of loosing money to those cities.) As far as the sweet tea.....I will try not to judge..ha. I finish all my posts with would you like some sweet tea because someone told me I wasn't showing enough southern hospitatlity on here so that's how I take care of that issue....would you like some sweet tea?

![]() I'll have a look at Owensboro. Another place we've seen some decent tracts of land for sale is in Cadiz. Know anything about that area? |

If you move to the Lakes region there will be plenty of nice restaurants within an easy drive. Patti's (in Grand Rivers) will very possibly be the best restaurant you've ever visited.....and I'm not joking. This restaurant makes all sorts of lists for best restaurants in the South. You'll also be close to Paducah which has tons of the chain restaurants but also has several local restaurants that are incredible. Downtown there are several locally owned restaurants (CC Cohen, Max's, Cynthia's, Whaler's Catch, Ristorante di Fratelli, and some more).

The only word of caution I will put forth about western kentucky in the areas you are mentioning is that you are in an isolated part of the state. Bowling Green is an exception with the interstate but when looking at Owensboro or Paducah they aren't the easiest places to get to in the world and as a result don't have a great deal of growth. Paducah is boasing a resurging downtown area but from what I have heard more things are leaving than coming in. They are both nice places but to get to an airport of not it takes a few hours i.e. louisville, nashville or st. louis and the hospitals leave a bit to be desired. Some people enjoy being away a bit but others don't like being so far from things like that. It just depends on what you like and what kind of ammenities you want close by. Would you like some sweet tea?

And your comment about healthcare is laughable when it comes to Paducah. Outside of UK Hospital and the UofL/Norton/Jewish/Kosair hospital complex in Louisville you'll find Western Baptist and Lourdes second to none in the state (in terms of research and technology taking place as well as the array of specialists and subspecialists available). I'll be a physician in a year, and I'm actually considering locating in Paducah because of its comprehensive healthcare offerings. |
