Well, it's no wonder you hear sirens constantly... since the HOSPITAL sits right there!!!! The difference between THOSE sirens, and the sirens I was referring to, would be.... ambulances, as opposed to police sirens!!! hahaha

Yes, I live near Pikeville. I am a retired coal miner and live on lower John's Creek. Pikeville is my place to "go to town".

Pikeville is our sad 'slice of Heaven' that we call home... I'd love to stay in the area, but there’s simply nowhere to work…Although this area has been tremendous progress my final advice would be “AVOID THIS AREA LIKE THE PLAGUE” Because in the long run this place is going nowhere, fast…
Ed....Why are you still here if it is to be avoided "like the plague"???...
and if you are not still here why do you feel the need to bash an area that is trying to overcome the natural geographic challenges it is faced with???

BTW...earlier you stated that the "War on Poverty" tour made a stop here(Pikeville).
That is a False statement.

Please stick to the truth when adding negativity to an already poorly stereoptyped area.

I haven't been there since 1984, and it might be heaven now... but last time I looked it was a narrow-minded, mean, and superficial little town, that would have welcomed Heinrich Himmler with opened arms as long as he had income enough to join the "Country Club", live in the "Bowles Addition" and shop "Dawhare's"...

The cultural center and aspiration of Pikeville, ky denizens was Lexington, Ky and Myrtle Beach, SC.

Really....

I wonder if the hateful posts we seem to get in the East Ky posts, especially Pikeville would get very far in the other sections of Ky..It just seems like everytime I think we are breaking our stereotyped image that the insults start landing back in our laps..We who choose to live here do so because of the small town friendliness and the progress that we are seeing in the form of medical facilities and higher education opportunities here at home, an airport and our love for the beauty of the mountains, and the peace of knowing who our childrens friends are, and where they go..The progress that is being made in the war on drug addiction with our rehab centers..Personally, I love Lexington, it is a nice town and so easy to get around in, and Louisville is beautiful..I have never been to Myrtle beach, but most people do love to go there..I have been to Waikiki Beach ,on the Island of Oahu, which is beautiful also..Most of us do travel outside of Pike County, but are happy to come back home at the end of the trip I don't live in the Bowles addition.(which is just one of quite a number of housing developments around town).I prefer the solitude of living outside of town..All I have to say to the posters, who only show up rarely to insult us, is, if you have some personal reason why you hate Pikeville is no reason to insult its people or the town who are probably not the real reason for your contempt..

I have lived most of my life in Pikeville (I was born here), with a short break living in West Palm Beach. I have worked in Chicago, several cities in West Virginia and Ohio while still living in Pikeville. I have vacationed out of the country so I have been past the city limits. Growing up I couldn't wait to leave, that is all I talked about. But to my surprise I wanted to come back. There are many places better than here and many worse. Jobs are hard to find. I was lucky, I have a good job. This place or any other place is what we make of it (and I mean individually). I have read the other posts good and bad. And that is what Pikeville is ........GOOD AND BAD........You will either love it or hate it as someone said in a previous post. Yes there are drugs here. Drugs are everywhere. All we can do is try to work together to make this a better place to live. You cannot judge a place or a people by a few undesirables.
If you don't like it, leave. If you have already gone, leave us alone. (I just can't wait for you to bash me now).
If you are planning to come to Pikeville, visit us and make up your own mind. Don't listen to any of us. Everyone's experience is different, it depends on the person you are.
I had hoped this forum was one where people from the area (PIKEVILLE) came together to discuss topics of importance, not a let's bash and trash the town and the people.
If anyone would like to talk about Pikeville in a constructive way, I am more than happy to do so. Please know from this point on I will not reply to anyone who continues to bash us, put us down, etc, etc and so on. I felt the need to say something now, but once we give our opinions we do not need to run it into the ground.
I look forward to some uplifting conversations in the future.
If not, I can leave the forum as easily as I joined.

Welcome Kwkat, to the forum..I hope you will stay..I am trying so hard to get more people from Pikeville and the County to stay..A few have come but I guess they got tired of the mean and insulting posts. Believe me it has gotten better..There is nothing wrong with not liking a town, but it is wrong to deliberately lie about a town and its peoplePikeville has so much to offer for a small town and it is progressive in the medical field and education..The talent of the people is so remarkable..I understand that some people prefer large towns and all the activities they offer, but many of us prefer the peace and solitude of the beauty and friendliness that I find here in the mountains..I have stayed away from the Ky Forum for months at a time, because some posters hurt us so badly just because they could..Lately though I have come and posted more often, because I am beginning to see that most are understanding us a little better..I hope you will stay..Dm me if you would like
