Hi everybody! I just wanted to thank all of you for all of the information that you posted. We have a better picture now and can't wait for the big move. We are really excited about it. One thing I did forget to ask is about the land. Is it hilly, flat, rock or woods. The place we inquired about is said to be wooded. But we were wondering if there is rock under it. We want to garden and maybe dig a well. Any ideas?

My sis lives just outside of Caneyville and when they built a new house recently the builder was unable to dig a basement because of the rock in the area. I'm not sure if all the land is like that in the area but its a good possibility.

Pici0274, I've been doing some reading on a sustainable living forum recently, and one of the posters is from Caneyville and speaks of having a good sized garden and county water. They are exploring the well issue also, so it must be possible on at least some sites. Try the county extension agent's office for more information on the soils and water sources. Good luck.

blue_eyedgirl, thanks for the information. That gives us something to think about. The property is 2 acres about a mile or so north of Caneyville.

nalabama, you give us hope! Thanks for the info. I will check out the county extension agent's office for more information. That was a good idea. Hope it will be positive results, because we want to garden and homestead a little.

I was reading the posts about snakes in Kentucky. What kind of snakes are around Caneyville?

My wife and I live in the Panhandle of Florida, and we were up in Caneyville this past week. Beware of wooded lands is all I can say and do not buy blind! The first realtor that we dealt with pushed us to buy 28 acres... On the side of a hill!

We did end up buying 32 acres of gently rolling hills though... Beautiful area...

Thank you to all those that gave information about Caneyville. We had a weeks vacation and spent it in Caneyville. Tent camping on our 2 acres no less. It was a little tough on these old bones, but would not trade the experience for anything. We are so glad that we took the time to go on this trip to look around. We just loved the area and the woods. The air was clean and made the breathing easy and the arthritis seemed to disapear or hide anyway. The people were very friendly! Two of the neighbors even offered to let us camp on their property and use the electric and water. We stayed on our land and one neighbor met us every morning and evening with a jug of water. You can't ask for more friendly people than that!

This is an update. We are still in Florida. Not by choice, we just don't know exactly what to do. ( Slow thinking 60 year old minds. ) As I posted earlier, we went to our Ky property and every thing was good. We saw that the property was sloped and we thought that we could still deal with that and build a little cabin or something and didn't have a major problem driving to the property. It has a dirt road going up the hill, but needed some clearing. The neighbor showed us an alley that goes to the back of the property. A little corner was cleared and made a perfect place to camp. All was good. That was in the fall of last year.

In May we were ready for the big move. We put everything in storage here until we could get some kind of something built there and would come back for our stuff later. But when we got to Ky, we were in for a shock. First, I think they had a very bad winter, because trees were down or broken everywhere in that area, our property included. Second, there was no road at all in the front of our land, someone plowed and made a wall accross the road ending at the neighbors. Really there was no road to the back of the property either because it was under water. We put garbage sacks over our shoes and walked a block up the hill. We had to park on another street. We have a small car so we couldn't drive through. We asked the neighbor if this was a rainy season or what and when does it stop and he said it rains until sometime in July. I called him a couple of days ago to ask about the road situation and he said it just rained again. When we were in Ky the neighbor said the city would fix the road, but when I asked him again about the road, he said the neighbors have to pay to have it fixed.

So now we don't know what to do. We are so disapointed. Any ideas?

We can't live there in the winter and it looks like summer will half over by the time we can get in.
