Question Harrison County Move

My family (husband, daughter, & myself) are looking at houses in Harrison Co. I was just curious about places not to move to in Harrison, and why? I would also like to know about the schools, crime, the people, the community in general? Also is Sadieville(Scott Co) a decent place to live?

Harrison Co is alright, but Cynthiana is a bit more on the dumpy end. It also has flooding problems.

Scott Co is really booming. I've only been to Sadieville once and it seemed like a nice very small town. It is right off I-75 just 45 miles from Florence or 30 miles to Hamburg Center in Lexington

I have to disagree with the "more on the dumpy end" characterization. It's the only town in an otherwise rural county without direct highway access, so it does have a bit of a backwater feel. But it's a quaint town with lots of history. Aside from a bit of run-down property near the river, there are a bunch of classic old homes and buildings and quite a few places to shop and eat. My home is equidistant from both Cynthania and Alexandria (the two closest places with a variety of shopping options), and we generally opt to go to Cynthania.

The biggest drawback is that there aren't a whole lot of job opportunities there, so you'd probably have to look toward Georgetown (about 15-20 miles away) or Lexington (about 35-40 miles distant) for work.

Default Harrison County

In my opinion Harrison County is a great place to live. Cynthiana is a great community that looks after its own- as well as newcomers. There is a lot of history there too.

I grew up in Berry, which was 13 miles from Cynthiana. While it was true that the bus ride lasted a long time, there was a lot of outdoor things to do when I got home.

The only reason Cynthiana gets maligned is because it's not Lexington. It is a small town, and it prides itself on that.

If you do want to go to Lexington, it's a 45 minute drive from Cynthiana, about an hour from Berry.

Yes, there was a flood-back in 1997. Before that, I think the last time we had major damage from a flood was in the '30s.

Basically, Cynthiana is just another dumpy little redneck town like most small towns in Kentucky. Not much there except Wal-Mart and the "dollar store."

It's just far enough attached from urban centers in Lexington, Newport, and Cincinnati that I don't see a real redeeming reason to live there.

Try Sadieville in Scott County, instead. Yes, still a small country town indeed, but access to Georgetown, Lexington, and Cincinnati/northern Ky. are considerably quicker. Once the I-75 widening project is finished, the interstate will be six or greater from Richmond to Covington (and ultimately south to Williamsburg, KY and north to Detroit, MI!)

I really hope people don't listen to jcm1986's posts. They're always negative toward Kentucky, not to mention rude and annoying. There's 49 other states you can move to you know.

Well, do you think Tennessee is worth a whole lot? I prefer it over Kentucky, but I can think of about 25 states I would choose to live over "Rocky Top" country--Georgia, N. Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, New York (NYC or its metro only), Wyoming, etc., all for various odd reasons.

Define alternative.

Seriously, define it in this case.

well, one redeeming reason might be that you don't live there?

did it ever occur to you that some people LIKE a small town without tons of stores and activities? A Walmart or a couple small stores might be enough for their basic everyday needs, especially when there is other shopping they can drive to occasionally. They might LIKE peace and quiet, and a rural atmosphere (which you seem to think equates to "redneck" and "dumpy"). What you like is not necessarily what everyone else wants....
