Russell would be my pick. It's a community that borders Bellefonte and has nearly as nice a class of resident, but without the higher home values. It does share a school system though. Upper class folks from bellefonte send their kids to Russell schools, so it is well funded and very stable. It has very good standing in both academics and sports programs. Russell would also be a very quiet and safe community, in my opinion. Do you have an idea of your price range of homes? Where are you from? What else are you looking for in a community, and last but not least, would you have a job lined up before moving here?

Yes, if we decide to move it would be for a transfer. We are from Louisiana, where the schools are not so great and you have to know what areas to stay out of to be safe. We live in a small town where it is safe to send your kids to public school and is pretty safe around town. We would need a 4 br home around 2200- 2400 sq ft and would like to stay in the 150000- 200000 dollar range and maybe with about an acre of land. We will be visiting the area soon so I am trying to get an idea of where would should drive around to look. Any suggestions would be great. A nice quiet community is what we are looking for.
Thanks,
hatnic

Raceland/Worthington also has a nice school system. It is a smaller community though, not as developed as Russell area, but they are all very close and not hard to get to one from the other. My previous job took me into many of the area school systems regularly. If I could suggest systems to avoid, I'd say avoid Greenup and Boyd Co schools. Russell Independent, Ashland Independent, Raceland/Worthington, would all be good choices. Russell being my top pick.
For the 150k to 200k range, a decent house should be found in most of the communities in the area.
Ashland does have a lot to offer. I hope you like it when you visit

Living in Ashland
Hello, I was born and raised in Ashland and all of my family are still present there. Like many small towns it has good and bad points. The overall cost of living is reasonable. The schools are solid. Taxes are paid on income earned in Ashland. I have not lived there in 21 years and overall it has not changed much as much as it would like to think so. I am there every couple of weeks to visit familyl. It has crime, but all cities do. The other poster indicated that Bellefonte is a nice area and it would probably be my pick. Skyline drive and BoyScout Rd are new areas if you are looking for newer type neighborhoods. I live in the Cinci area and still love to go home to shop in Ashland. My niece went to the schools and was as prepared for college as my own daughter who went to a larger city school that had better "ratings" Like many smaller towns, Ashland can have a beautiful house on one corner and a dump on the next block. You buy the house you want, it is not always a neighborhood thing like the area I currently live in. It has very good "community" and even after all this time, many people still know many people. My brother in law was a policeman for 36 years so I am sure he can comment better on the crime. There is not a lot of art and "culture" but it does have a lot to offer.
If there is anything that I can offer you in information I would be happy to do so.

All these areas are safe and have good schools. The economy is good due to the steel, petroleum, coal, and marine industries. Huntington is less safe than ashland and has a much higher crime rate though still lower than national average. Ashland is a safe town and the schools in town are great. If good schools is an issue with your decision I would recommend Ashland over any other community in the area.

Any of the areas listed above are great areas to live. As for cheerleading Greenup County High School has been nation champs many many times.

I can agree with most of this, but the economy is not good. All of these industries are weak and faltering. Yes ashland is safe, But;d not move there unless I already had good employment lined up
