Oh puhleeze, abortion is a PERSONAL choice, it's not an easy one. If a woman has made her choice then she's made it. Why do you think it's ok to torment her more?

One of the biggest problems with many Kentuckians is their inability to vote for their own best interests- be it for a Democrat or a Republican.

The state ranks low for overall quality of life, has one of the lowest ranking educational systems in the nation, and its citizens have some of the worst health care options and health of the 50 states.

It seems the political idealogy- which is against social and economic reform that will benefit the poor and disenfranchised in the blue grass state are secondary to 'gays, guns' and patriotism'.

How far do we take this? How much more help do we need to give the poor and disenfranchised. Welfare while some aspects are good has caused so many social problems in this country it is a tragedy. Women have more and more babies because it is a paycheck for them. Why go look for work or try and better your situation if the government will just pay me to sit around and have kids. While the idea of welfare is noble it has caused a nation of people that expect more and more and are willing to do less and less for themselves. Remember when Kennedy asked "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country?" That is the mindset this country needs and this state. What can we do to get ourselves out of this mess and better our lives. Not I am entitled to help and the government owes me this or that. I work my tail off every day for what I have and it drives me crazy when people abuse a system and do nothing but collect handouts from the government. If it is so rough for the poor why are three quarters of them overweight? I am so sick of people sucking this country dry. If someone is down on their luck and need some help then God bless them and help them out but now it is people that are down on their luck and blame everyone else but themselves for their circumstances and feel they deserve money, food, housing, etc from the goverment while they do nothing to better themselves....oh maybe have some more kids for some extra cash. How about a political ideology that helps out the middle class and up that actually go to work every day and contribute to society and the economy instead of punishing them for making a buck and being successful. Paying people with an oil profits tax is socialism. Your company did to well and made to much money so we are going to take it and give it to the masses....whats up Marx.

I guarentee you noone is getting rich having more kids on welfare. Are there people who abuse the system? Sure, it's called fraud. But IMO I'd rather it be in place than not. The average woman (I say woman because they make up the majority of people on welfare) is WHITE in her 30s or 40s and recently divorced. They stay on for 6 months or less.

*this is an area I actually know about, I have a BS in Sociology.

They're overweight because it's cheaper to feed a family a frozen pizza than fresh fruits and veggies. It's expensive to eat good healthy foods.

I have minor in sociology so I know a bit on the subject myself. I didn't say anyone was getting rich having more kids but they are getting checks which may not make them rich but is enough for them to not feel the need to find a better job, one at all, or improve their lives. People shouldn't expect the government to give them everything. We are a nation that expects to be handed things instead of one that goes and gets them. Welfare is a huge reason this is the case. You being a sociology major cannot disagree that while good in principle it has caused a population that has no incentive to do anything because they have a roof, food, and don't even have to work.

If I were to kill my children who are already born, it would likewise be a PERSONAL choice, but that doesn't mean it should be legal. Neither should it be legal to kill an unborn child.

Not all women who come into an abortion clinic are firm in their decision to kill their child. Shouldn't they be as informed as possible about such a monumental decision? Especially since a woman who has made such a decision will quite possibly spend the rest of her life tormented over the fact that she killed her baby.

I hate to disagree but food stamps will buy fresh fruits and vegetables, good proteins, and low fat dairy just like they do frozen pizza and french fries. Also, Kentucky has a great climate for growing your own fruits and vegetables and seeds are cheap. People are just too lazy to cook healthy foods and eat all of this overprocessed, frozen junk. I know some ladies who volunteered in a thrift store and food bank ran by the Catholic church in town, they said people would come in asking for money and they would tell them they did not give money but would give them food and clothing, when they offered them flour, corn meal, dried beans, milk, eggs, oats, grits and such they said what are we supposed to do with this? That is the mentality of the population today. They want McDonald's or Pizza Hut not food they have to cook.

But it's CHEAPER to buy a frozen pizza for $1.50 than fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes, food stamps will buy the fresh fruits and vegetables, but they'll go further in convenience foods.

Also, I am sorry to disagree, but much of Kentucky has that light-colored hard clay soil, and it can be difficult to grow things in. I know this from experience. Of course it's doable, but again, many of these folks are operating from an attitude of defeat (and they don't know how to do things). It's quite a multi-faceted problem. No grit, no home training, no knowledge how to do things, combined with cheap easy convenience foods and a TV culture.

None of these things are unique to Kentucky by any means - it's a problem in many places.

My mother's side of the family farmed Kentucky land back through many generations dating back into the early 1800's. There is no problem growing most anything in the soil in south central Kentucky and if you can't there are farmers markets everywhere, vegetables, when they are in season are extremely cheap. You are right that it comes down to no home training and no grit. IMO people are just getting so lazy, no one cooks a meal anymore. They feed their kids chicken nuggets and tater tots and then wonder why they are obese at 11.
