Pineville doesn't get much snow, it is in a mountainous area but the town is in a valley with a big mountain looming over it. It's very small and most people in Pineville drive 10 or so miles south to shop, eat at restaurants and work in Middlesboro. Bell County's population has been in a slow decline for years now.

I lived in Pineville 50 years ago and still have family in Bell County, the town never did really recover from the flood in 1977. Not much there anymore. I remember as a kid we got some really big snow storms there...and get out of school for 2 or 3 days.

What do you mean the town never really recovered? Is it more of a deserted town? Hurricane Katrina hit here and some parts of New Orleans look like war zones. Biloxi looks like a ghost town in some parts. Did people move away and never rebuild?
Thanks,
hatnic

Pineville has a flood wall now. It isn't a deserted town, it's very small and nearly all the houses are old. There's very little new construction. You can walk downtown easily from anywhere in town. Pine Mountain State Park is really nice and has great views.
Picture of Pineville is from Google images. The 4 lane road on the right is US Highway 25 E.

Most of the people did not have flood insurance and could not rebuild, I had two uncles that lost a business in the flood. Before the flood hwy 25E was a two lane road through Pineville and had several motels and resturants on it, none of that is there anymore...they demolished all the building and made 25E a four lane road.
Pineville does have a few small businesses there, but they don't have any motels anymore unless one has been recently that I don't know about. The nearest motels, resturants and shopping would be in Middlesboro. (14 miles)
A lot of people have moved away from the Pineville area (Bell County in general) over the years because of lack of jobs there. The area does have some nice scenery though. I own 80 acres in Bell county I inherited when My dad passed away several years ago, but it is useless really, it's all mountain side and steep as a horses face...lol... can't build on it.
If I were moving in that area I would pick Middlesboro, it's a small town also but you can buy most anything you need there. Middlesboro is near the Tennessee line so shopping in TN would be close as well. I was born just across the line from Middlesboro in TN and grew up around the Bell County (KY) and Claiborne County (TN) area. The area on both sides of the line is beautiful there. If possible it would be best to spend a weekend in the area and check out the Pineville and Middlesboro area in person. The people there are really great folks.
Here is a video of the flood to give you an idea of what damage it did.

We had an opportunity this past weekend to visit Pineville and it was beautiful. Is it expensive to buy a lot and build in Pineville? Has anyone built recently?
Thanks,
hatnic

I know this in an old thread, but I wanted to thank you for posting the video of the Pineville flood. My Dad was from Pineville - Stoney Fork, actually, and he worked for HUD here in Nashville when the flood happened. I was 6, but I remember my Dad being gone for a few months while he headed up the Pineville HUD office to bring releif to the locals, set up trailers, etc. Daddy died over 4 years ago and rarely talked about the flood. We were just in Pineville/Middlesboro yesterday visiting Dad's grave - he and many other family members are buried up in Pinelawn Cemetary - and our kin that are still in the area. It's funny, I have 2 cousins that work in law enforcement there and I was just at the courthouse chatting with them yesterday - the courthouse that in the video is flooded! I saw a photo of the A&P and have fond memories of shopping there with my Mamaw.
The town has changed and I personally couldn't live there after living in a large city, but one of my brothers loved the area and when he graduated HS, he moved back and graduated from LMU and built a house on our family land in Bell County. Like you, we have many acres that go up the side of Pine Mountain - not much use for building, but man the timber $$ is good! My brother that lived there died 10 years ago and my remaining brothers don't want any part of the land or KY. When my Mom dies, my husband and I plan to buy my brothers out and have that land for ourselves. It's absolutely beautiful up there!
Thanks again for posting the video link. It made me feel a little closer to my Dad to see what he had to work with so many years ago.
