Snakes are pretty common near any body of water. My dog cornered a 5 foot long Black Snake at Fisherman's Park in Louisville earlier this year.

I used to live next to woods here in PRP and got snakes in my yard quite a bit. As a matter of fact, my husband earned the name jeff Corwin after chasing one down with a snake hook one evening lol I also had a large rat snake stretched out on my front porch once sunning right under my bay window. As far as venomous ones, I have yet to see one myself.

We live near a large open meadow, and although we've had snakes around our neighborhood, they've never been poisonous.

My mother in law lives right on the Ohio, one day we saw a rat snake. Well there was this high pitched scream and then I took off running. Snakes UGH.

We're in Lawrence County, and it doesn't get much more rural than where we're at. Snakes are just part of life around here. Our beagle manages to get snake bit at least once a year. They're no real big deal, though. In the four years I've lived in this house, I've never had a snake come indoors. My cat did pull a snake skin out of the attic a couple years ago, though.

Was mowing a friend's yard a couple weeks ago and found out by accident that a Craftsman riding mower can slice and dice about a 2 ft black snake. At least it looked like a 2 footer right before he crawled underneath me!

I was raised in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky and as children we ran into snakes almost on a daily basis. We always screamed and ran away and the snakes ran as fast as they could in the opposite direction. No harm done.

We were always taught that if you smelled cucumbers, you should get out of the area because that could mean a copperhead is near. Of course, rattlesnakes give a different kind of warning. You want to be careful around water and watch out for water moccasins. Otherwise, I don't think we have that many poisonous snakes in Kentucky. Most of them are harmless. That doesn't make me like them, though.

When I was a child we had a farm way out in the boonies that had the Gasper River running through it. There were snakes of many varieties on that land...including rattle snakes, copperheads, water moccasins, chicken snakes, black snakes...way too many snakes. My grandfather hunted on the property and killed a huge rattle snake one day. Sadly, one of his hunting dogs he kept on the farm got bit by a rattler and died later. Unless, you are in the woods, you shouldn't be bothered by snakes though.
