Hello All.
I am a retired N.Y.P.D officer (late 40's,wife and 2 older teens) and I am very interested in moving to the beautiful state of Kentucky. I never stayed in KY but have driven through on various road trips and liked what I have seen.
I was looking in the London and Corbin areas, could I get some feed back on these locations. I am interested in low crime, nice people and open space.
Any feed back on these locations would be very much apperciated. If there are other nice locations I am missing please feel free to tell me.
Also if possible can I get locations of were NOT to move.
Thanks Kerry

Of the London and Corbin areas, the choice is London hands down. In fact, I'm convinced that when you look at London's location to Lake Cumberland, accessibility to the rest of eastern Ky. via the Hal Rogers Parkway, and the niceness of the downtown area, you'll like it. London IS the best town in ALL of southeastern Kentucky, hands down; shopping opportunities are closer by in Lexington, there are 4-5 lakes within an hour radius (with Laurel River Lake being only 10 minutes away), and there are several nice parks just there within London.
Corbin's a dump. Period. Please don't move there. Barbourville, Somerset, Hazard and Manchester (all in SEKY) aren't charmers, either.
Other areas in Kentucky I'd recommend and can offer more info on if you'd like: Danville, Owensboro, Wilmore, and the suburban areas around Louisville (namely Oldham County). I think you'd really like these areas.

Thanks for the info. Every little bit helps me narrow it down. If you have other locations in KY that are nice please feel free to write. SE,NE,W location is not important just as long as its nice.

Western Kentucky can be very pretty, and plenty of open space. If you like lakes, there are some very fine lakes in far Western Kentucky. The only problem with Western Kentucky can be a job shortage in certain fields. If that isn't a problem for you, there are some really very fine areas all around Kentucky.
For pretty, safe areas WITH jobs, Central Kentucky is the best. jcm1986 has hit some good highlights, and there are others.

I guess I should have been alittle more specific. I would like to have at least 5 or more acres. If this helps anyone.

If you're looking at SE-KY, definitely go with London. It seems to be one of the only cities in the area that is growing. I was down there about a month ago and the downtown's in great shape, there's a number of great restaurants- Sal et Poivre is my favorite. There are numerous lakes, lots of open space around the city, the mountains are close by, Lexington is 1 hour away, Lake Cumberland is probably 45 minutes- 1 hour away. It's by far the best place in SE-KY to live in. Corbin isn't a total dump, it has more shopping options than London does (if Belk counts). However, I would go with London over Corbin ANYDAY.

You may also want to look at Elizabethtown (broken link). Its a nice town, and quite a bit to do there for a town of its size (about 25,000). They also have a very nice shopping mall.
Your also only 30-40 minutes from Louisville/Jefferson County.
Elizabethtown was also featured in the movie " Elizabethtown".
