AQS Quilt Show Future Still Unclear - NewsChannel 6 WPSD
Remember when we were all told the quilt show was going to remain in Paducah and the Executive Inn was going to undergo renovations and have half of the rooms ready by April? Well guess what? The $40 million loan hasn't been approved. The quilt show people are pissed, the city is pissed, and in my personal opinion, the hotel owners knew this $40 million loan was not feasible. The hotel is crumbling. The wiring and plumbing are shot. Outside of the quilt show, they have very little occupancy the rest of the year. Now would you give $40 million for that? I do have a feeling that the quilt show people are fed-up with this mess and once they decide (if they decide) to leave, they will never come back. This will ultimately decide the legacy of Mayor Bill Paxton if they lose the show. The city had the chance to buy the Inn from the beginning and have screwed the pooch ever since.

I have a feeling this will get worked out. They aren't looking for a $40 million loan. That has already been secured, but it appears it only becomes available when an interim $2.5 million loan is found. It's the $2.5 million they're having trouble with. However, city of Paducah could easily back a $2.5 million loan if they needed. Obviously, if a private loan could be found then that is superior, but if needed I believe the city will step up.
I think it's a very definite possibility that Paducah could lose the quilt show this year, but I suspect it will be back the following year if that happens. The AQS already has conventions in large cities (Nashville, Houston, etc). They have stated numerous times that they like the intimate atmosphere and charm of Paducah. Also, the founders of the AQS are from Paducah. They want it to stay in their hometown. By the 2010 date of the convention the new Hyatt/Hilton downtown should be open and could serve as host if needed.

Shouldn't they have done that by now? And the only reason why the show has held this long is due to the fact the founders are from Paducah.
Anyway, the story has been updated:
Paducah Quilt Show Could Move - Executive Inn renovations Unlikely to be Finished in Time. - NewsChannel 6 WPSD
Looks like Springfield, MO has some extra revenue coming their way. It all goes back to my first line of this post, "Shouldn't they have done that by now?" The city is the only one responsible for this mishap. You would figure their 2% (and wanting to up it to 3%) income tax would be more than enough. As much as I hate the quilt show, it is money for our area. There are not alot of conventions/shows in this area and this is a MAJOR blow.

I read about all that in the Paducah Sun online this morning. I think the best thing they can do to improve the Executive Inn is to fund a way to buy out that pain in the a** owner, Bhupinder Singh. If someone who gave a damn about keeping the hotel up and looking at the money he made off that quilting show, Paducah wouldn't be going through this!
On another note, kentuckydad, I see there's going to be a coroner job open in Calloway County. Seems the coroner had been gardening a little more than he should have! lol You going to try for the job? lol

As far as the quilt show, the city had their chance to buy the place outright. Singh owns the place, but I think he has a company managing??? I didn't read the article.
The coroner story really suprised me. He has been here a long while. And no, I don't want the job. Too many customers who never talk to ya.

The Executive Inn Has Power Disconnected - NewsChannel 6 WPSD
Ahh yes...this just keeps getting better and better. Now the hotel didn't pay their light bill. That oughta swing the quilt show founders in direction of staying in Paducah.

If it is going to cost that much to renovate this place, would it be smarter to tear it down and start over? Just wondering.

You would think that, but Paducah leaders have never been too smart.

There going to build a 150 room Hyatt, not big enough for the quilt show but it's something, the Executive Inn is a joke anymore. Singh was never going to fix it up and he can play "pay my price or you loose the quilt show" and Paducah powers that be were stupid for not buying cheap when they could ... oh well I don't love there, look to me the taxpayers there are going to get a high bill from Paxtons poor planning.
