Need Info for E-Town (Elizabethtown, Ky) (crime rate, home, buying)

We just moved to E-town last month and really like it here. My parents are moving down next year to retire here since the cost of living is very reasonable also.
For houses, I'd recommend looking at the developments along New Glendale Road. The price per acre starts at $20K in the newer developments, but land can be purchased for much less in outlying areas too. Either way you go, you should be less than 15 minutes to shopping, church, and other activities.

We moved here from California in 2006 and we love it here. We noticed the friendliness of the people right away. I bought an acre lot in Oak Grove Manor and purchased a ICF house, the builder was wonderful! And my house is very energy efficient I couldn't be happier. The location is close to everything. My lot is wooded in the back so I can look out my back windows and almost imagine I am in the mountains, yet I am just 3 blocks from Rafferty's! We have lots of birds, squirrels, and rabbits to watch too. I absolutely love Etown, and the weather is not extreme. I was expecting horrible humidity and lots of snow in the winter, neither has been the case so far. And I absolutely love the 4 seasons, something I did not have in California. I was born in Orange County, and I saw many changes there, some not to the better, so I was ready for my new life in Ky. I truly think you will love it here. The only thing it is missing is a GOOD Mexican restaurant!

Glad you like E'town. E'town is one of Kentucky's nicest small towns. In fact, E'town is a true gem in a sea of not-so-nice towns around it, including Radcliff (dirty/scroungy), Leitchfield (10%+ unemployment rate), Bardstown (very snooty), Shepherdsville (very high concentration of overt racists), and Munfordville (very dull).

Loved reading all the posts about E'town, especially since it is one of our possible retirment locations spots to consider! Other option in Ky. is Bowling Green. Anyone care to give their reasons why E'town would be a better choice?

Well, great location to start with. Close to Louisville for "culture," yet far enough away to avoid "big city" problems.

Very safe--low crime rate. Lots of good neighborhoods to live in, with a variety of housing available at reasonable cost.

Excellent medical care available. Hardin Memorial Hospital is a regional medical center (300 beds) and plenty of good doctors in all areas of practice have offices there.

Good transportation available. E'town is the "hub" of the Kentucky interstate highway--parkway system. Centrally located, and all roads lead to E'town.

Progressive, educated population with good schools and community college.

Many excellent restaurants, and other "quality of life" facilities.

Very friendly place to live.

Ok, E'town is closer to Louisville then Bowling Green is to Nashville, but the distance isn't that bad.

I'd have to agree that E'town does have a lower crime rate, but then again the city is less populated.

I would think that Bowling Green has the other things you've mentioned as well though. Do you have reason to believe it doesn't?

No it does. They offer the same amenities, but BG is growing a bit faster and has a few more things due to it having a larger state university. Still, I'd rather be a few miles closer to the cultural options of Louisville than taking the longer trek into Nashville from BG for the same, as the traffic in Nashvegas is substantially worse. Plus, as states, Etown is more centrally located to other population centers. You can take day trips all over the region, including big cities like Chicago (much better than Atlanta, but I am biased! )

The last thing I'd want to do once getting away from madison, is take a trip to Chicago! I hate driving through Chicago & we usually have to anytime we leave the state of Wi.
I hear you though I'm pretty sure once we get a feel for both cities, we'll have a better idea where we'd be happier living overall. Let's not forget that we also have the cities of Cookeville & Smyrna Tn to consider. One huge advantage that Bowling Green has over E'town is the amount of disc golf courses within the city limits. If that were the only reason to choose a place, the choice would have been made already

Well, if you hate traffic, be wary of Smyrna. Nashville has been developing massive sprawl, and Smyrna is a classic sunbelt sprawlburb where the roads cannot keep up with the traffic and growth. I don't know a think about Cookeville, but by the looks of it, it is probably similar to Elizabethtown.

Thanks for the warning We will just have to see for ourselves if the amount of traffic is something we wouldn't care to deal with. Of course, we would have the option to not travel whenever traffic is at it's worse, being retired
