?'s about Danville Lexington's traffic is too much for me!
I sold my home in Michigan and am doing several road trips to help me decide where I should move. I like Lexington, but had never been during rush hour until today. It's just too crazy for me! I grew up in the Detroit area, but have lived in a smaller town for many years and I just don't want to get used to sitting in stop and go traffic for large portions of the week.
I drove through Danville and really liked it a lot. I'll eventually be looking for a home under $100K and there are some places that fit the bill there in neighborhoods that I wouldn't hate living in. How are the real estate taxes?
I will rent for 6-12 months though and wonder if it is possible to rent a 2 bdrm house or apt. for $500 or so. Also, what is the job market like? Do most people end up driving to Lexington to work, or are there plentiful opportunities in Danville itself? I have worked in tourism for many years, but would probably be looking for some sort of office job.
TIA Any input would be great. If it makes any difference, I am a 54 year old single woman.

Danville has quite a bit of retail jobs, there's Centre College and other large businesses such as American Greetings and R.R. Donnelley, both employ more than 600 people.

You might also consider Frankfort, it has tons of government jobs. Danville is a great town, I'm just not sure how easy you could get a job in your field their

Thank you to both of you. Censusdata, I found a job listed in Frankfort that may be tailor made for me. We'll see what happens!

Lexington's traffic is pretty bad for a city it's size, that's for sure.
Danville is a nice small town, my favorite in central KY. I'd also consider Frankfort. (Hey, I'm with censusdata on this one.) These are the only two small towns in central KY worth considering, IMO.
Danville has plenty of factory jobs along US 127 and KY 34. There are plenty of retail outlets, including Wal-Mart, Aldi, Kroger, Office Depot, Goody's, Lowe's, JCPenney, and Peebles. There are four colleges--Centre (a prestigious liberal arts college), National Coll., EKU-Danville, and BCTC-Danville. There's the Northpoint Training/Correctional Center on KY 33. What line of work are you looking at? Danville offers quite a bit for a town of only 17,000, and a lot of people still commute to Frankfort or Lexington. As for rent, though, a 2BR will probably rent out at $700 in town.

I worked in local tourism for many years, but now I would like an office job. Preferably something 9-5 M-F since I worked 7 days a week for most of the year for the last nine years. :-( It's time to have a life, but I need to make a living too.
Thanks for the ideas.
