It's really hard to understate how URBAN Pikeville feels. It is like one mile of Pittsburgh or Cincinnati and makes Bowling Green & Owensboro's "Downtown" areas feel like suburbs. It reminds me some of Frankfort but is alot cleaner

Those were wonderful pics. I have never been to pikeville, always wanted to drive there. I have been to Hazard once, pikeville looks, from the photos of yours, much more nice. Great Job

Pikeville is what I call a big, little town..Meaning that we have what we need, yet still are small enough to constantly run into family and friends wherever we go ..One thing I really admire about our restaurants, schools and grocery stores is that they get inspected every month or so and the results are always published..You can be sure that if you stop in to eat that it is clean and at or above the standards..
Downtown Pikeville finished the placing of all utility lines underground, which adds to the uncluttered appearance..
I would like to see some more art, crafts and specialty boutique shops in the downtown area..I think it would be a great enhancement for visitors to any of the activities in the Civic Center, and for the guests at the downtown and nearby motels..
There are many newcomers to the area (Drs, med students, job transfers, etc) who have decided to stay and raise their families..
We have our problems, like all towns and counties in this great state of Kentucky, but are working very hard to overcome them..
I thank all of you on this thread for the great photos and the positive things you have said.
Maybe the stereotypical image is beginning to disappear after all

I wouldn't want to live in eastern KY at all, but Pikeville does certainly look like it's worth a good day or weekend trip.

Pikeville is a wonderful area, depending on the type of person you are. I have lived in Pikeville all my life, I joined the army a few years ago, and have lived in many areas, but once I got out, I made a bee line back! There aren't alot of things to do right in the area, but it is in a good location to have a short drive to go somewhere, like the breaks interstate park isn't far away, and is a very beautiful place, Huntington is a short distance away and has a few things to do there. But all in all, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
But if anyone would like to see more pictures from around here I would be glad to take pictures next time i'm going anywhere, I've got school most days of the week, then there is work, so if you'd like i'll just take some random pictures for you guys

I love the pictures Census! I wish I would have went through Pikeville on my way back through Bristol. I should take that way next year.
I can't believe how Pikeville looks like such a big city, yet only has 5,000 people. As census said it's very urban. Shoot I live in a town of 10,000 people here in WI and our tallest building is 5 stories.
Kudos to you census for taking a road trip over that way!

IN general Appalachian towns feel more urban than cities in flatter regions because there is very little good land to build on. Even a lot of rural communities in Eastern KY have apartment buildings -
