Default Relocating from Illinois to Kentucky

My girlfriend and I are moving to Bardstown, KY this December. Shes a CNA and I work whatever I can get (temp. agencies is all thats out here because the economy is so bad). Is the job market a little bit better in the Bardstown area? I'm willing to travel to Louisville. We live in a very rural area about 1.5 hrs away from a "larger" city with jobs (Rockford). I know Bardstown to Louisville is about 30 miles... is the job market good out their for someone that has experience in factory work/warehouse. I also plan on going back to school for a trade, what trade I want to do I'm undecided... but is their trade schools in the area? Im also turning 21 this December, I was wondering if theirs some entertainment for people my age? Also if anyone knows if theirs a powerlifting gym in the area? Any answered questions would be great. Im blind to the area... were moving their for better work opportunities and my girlfriends family lives their. Will be living with her sister down their till we get out feet wet. Were real excited and can't wait to go. So any info would be great.

Bardstown is a Louisville exurb closely tied to the city. Job opportunites are much greater than the much smaller Rockford metro area. I would also consider other exurbs of Louisville like La Grange, Shelbyville, and Shepherdsville. There are lots of trade jobs in this area. I would try to get on at UPS first...

Hmmmm...Bardstown. As stx said, it is a suburb closely tied to the city. One of the snootier places in Kentucky, to be honest (IMO), but it has been growing at a decent clip since the late 1980s.

I don't know about powerlifting gyms in B'town. As for entertainment, there's a movie theatre on KY 245 near Wal-Mart and that's about it. For more entertainment, you have to drive to Elizabethtown for...another movie theatre, to Bloomfield for a small bowling alley (don't know if Bardstown has one), or Louisville for basically the entertainment capital of Kentucky.

Bardstown has plenty of factories, as well as Heaven Hill Distillery. Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, and Four Roses are relatively close-by, also. Other nearby towns with a strong presence of industry include Lebanon, Elizabethtown, Shelbyville, and of course Louisville.

There are no "trade schools" of sorts in Bardstown. Not a single college in B'town/Nelson County. However, Elizabethtown Community/Technical Coll. is about 35 miles west. Jefferson Community/Technical College has three campuses (two in Louisville, one in Shelbyville) within 45 min.-1 hr. of B'town, as does Bluegrass Community/Technical Coll. in Lawrenceburg and Danville. There's Sullivan University and Spencerian Coll. (part of Sullivan system) in Louisville, Lexington, and Ft. Knox, as well as ITT Tech in Louisville.

The job market here is not good. Think about moving to another state. Need more information send me a message. There are other problems that exist. I thought this was a good state in the beginning. Definitely not the case. Anybody thinking of moving into Kentucky, please stay away. We will be moving next year. There is alot of corruption, crime, no jobs, racism, and no hospitality. You will not be accepted if you are an outsider. Some of the houses are built, on limestone and are sinking. The govenment officials are useless. The police department rates a -1. The state is beautiful, but that is one benefit only. If you are poor, whether white, or another minority. You will be treated like crap.

I'd say Shepherdsville would be a much better fit, just giving the fact that a new hospital is going to be built (which could be helpful for your wife) and the hundreds and hundreds of jobs coming to bullitt county in the logistics sector (for yourself). With these jobs, you won't have to keep working at labor marts! I'd say bullitt county would be best!

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call Bardstown a suburb of Louisville, but I know a lot of people do commute. Unless you are working on the outer south or southeast rim of Jefferson County, I think a 30 minute commute is a little too underestimated.

Bardstown is definitely rural, so that fits your needs. I don't think there is a lot for young people to do in Bardstown, but Louisville has a ton of stuff for people your age. A great music and restaurant scene and plenty of good college sports.

I rarely hear us called unfriendly, so that surprises me a little. Our state has a lot of faults, like all states, and I'm hardly one who is a blind cheerleader for Kentucky. But from my experience, the friendliness of the people is not one of our faults.

I have to say - Bravo for you! Of all the places here in Kentucky - if we were moving, I would head to Bardstown. It is not that far from Louisville - depending on where you are headed, and the town itself is such a wonderful place to be. Just the feel of it is like stepping back in time!

It is a close knit community - as most of the population is third or more generation, but once you get to know them, it is friendly and caring. The school system is fantastic - my step=-brothers children go to the Bardstown City schools, as does my cousins child.

I think thejob market is tough right now no matter where you go - however more opportunities are opening up, and you have many options in that particular area. Your girlfriend should have no problem finding a job with her CNA, as many Louisville docs have satelitte offices in that area, and the hospital, while small, does need staff. She may consider checking out Louisville, Kentucky Hospitals and Immediate Care Centers: Norton Hospital, Kosair Children's, Norton Audubon, Norton Suburban - Norton Healthcare, a huge medical group in the area which has so many offices and facilites - they are always hiring.

As for you - the Community colleges mentioned above are great places to look, and I am sure you can find something in the meantime. Checkout Toyota and Akebono Corporation, two companies fairly close which are hiring, and also General Electric in Louisville, which is also hiring now:
General Electric jobs in Louisville, KY - this site should get you where you need to be to apply for current factory jobs. I noticed the jobs listed are possibly not what you were thinking, but it will get you to the people who can give you more info. Many people in Bardstown carpool each day, wich will help with your travel.

YiPpIe! - Bardstown Health Clubs & Gyms - Bardstown, KY This site will put you on the path to power lifting, as I am not sure of any specifics in the direct area. However, their are several in Louuisville.

It will take some time to get used to traveling, but I don't think you will regret the move. If you would liketo contact me by direct message, I can give you more specifics for your employment.

Take care and we look forward to having you!

Brenda, you must have fallen into the wrong community! I am not sure exactly where you are, but I have never known the treatment here to be so poor. I hate that you have had such a bad experience!

Where are you, exactly, if you do not mind my asking. Perhaps we can help in some way? I hate to see you leave with such a bad impression - I can only hope people who have mistreated you have had a bad day and you just happened to get caught in it.

Once again - sorry, and i am curious to know what community you are in.

Take care!

KimmieyKY
