Default Sate of the State

California where I live, is in terrible shape financially at the State level. Incompetent legislatures, etc have brought the State just about to it's knees financially.

What is the situation with the Kentucky's State finances. Good, bad, a surplus, a deficit, a mess, great??? This is at the State level, not personal, etc.

To be honest, I cannot answer that question directly, only to say according to news reports, there is talk of raising taxes, always concern over what programs are lacking in funding - that sort of thing. The following links may get you started in more fully answering your question.

Kentucky: Finance Cabinet - Welcome
DSIRE: Incentives by State: Incentives in Kentucky

I can say, in my opinion, it does seem as though the Commonwealth (we are technically not a 'state') is on the way to improving the economy. Kentucky does not seem as though it is suffering as many other states are - other than the gas prices and retail/grocery prices - and so far only cigarette taxes (I believe) have been raised in an effort to rake in more money. There is also talk about adding Casino's to the entertainment venue, hoping the procedes raised will provide money without raising further taxes.

Curious - why do you ask? Planning on moving, or just doing comparison research?

Hi,

I will be visiting this week, as my wife and I intend to move out of Calif and into either TN or KY. Looking at Bowling Green and Nashville, TN. So I guess a bit of comparison shopping as well.

HIi

Thank you. I may take you up on that offer once we have visited.

Hope you like LA. I used to live in the SF Valley and worked in LA and am quite familiar with the area, so let me know if I can help you in any way.

There is some concern over revenue to state government. The Governor had a press conference concerning it being down the last month/quarter (Can't remember which). There is a Constitutional requirement of a balanced budget, so the issue is not suppose to drag on like it does in other jurisdictions. (not suppose to)

Bowling Green is a nice city (I actually live a couple hours east of there). You might also look at Louisville.

I'd take Nashville over Bowling Green any day and I'm from Kentucky! Personally I like a larger city and while Nashville is indeed large, it doesn't seem huge, there is still that quintessential small town feeling, in my opinion. Nice downtown area and traffic isn't bad for a city of its size. To me, Bowling Green is just a mess of new construction with endless rows of strip malls... If you're looking at Kentucky, I'd go for either Lexington or Louisville.

maybe nashville doesn't seem so huge because it's so sprawled out and has a very low person per square mile compared to louisville at least.

Obviously, Bowling Green and Nashville are apples and oranges. Nashville has a great economy and very nice downtown, but it's freeway system is VERY confusing. BG has tons of chain restaurants and stores, but its downtown makes Shelbyville look big
