Do you own a gun?
My husband and I were discussing guns and their popularity here in KY earlier and I am just curious

That would depend on what type of game he plans to hunt.

Yes, I own several. My Grandfather (on mom's side) was an avid hunter & taught me how to hunt squirrel & rabbit in Kentucky when I was 9 years old. I've been hunting ever since. I also used to shoot competively with IPSC/USPSA (pistol) and won a state title several years ago.
You husband may need to consider more than one gun for the different types of game you mentioned. I'd be glad to offer any advise if you want.

I don't own a gun--wife won't let me.
Seriously, she's just nervous because we have kids in the home. Besides, I'm not a hunter and I have no need for one from a personal/property protection standpoint (our two large dogs take care of that). Plus, I have baseball bats strategically located throughout my home.
All that said, I do enjoy shooting, particularly skeet and trap. My father-in-law, who lives only a couple miles away, has a nice arsenal of shotguns, rifles, and pistols that I'm welcomed to use any time I want. He even has a launcher for clay pigeons and equipment/materials to pack his own shotgun shells. Since it's not uncommon for us to blow through a few hundred shells in an afternoon, reusing casings and packing our own helps keep the cost down.

Do you take your dogs with to grocery shop? How about while out trick-or-treating? Movies, Mall...? My wife grew up "in town", and never saw a gun. She never saw the need, even though I carry everywhere I legally can.
My wife now carries (and has her Concealed carry permit).
What changed her mind?
Two or three years ago while living in Virginia Beach, a woman was shot and killed in an pretty "up scale" shopping center. It was broad daylight, two week before Christmas. As she was loading her bags into her car, the killer stopped his car behind hers and robbed her. She gave him everything she had, she complied with his every demand. He shot her dead, right there.
The time to need a gun isn't when you need a gun.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

That's a pretty broad range for one gun. If you could only have ONE gun to do the job, a shotgun would be the way to go. A 12 gauge would be OK for deer and waterfowl, but wouldn't leave much usable rabbit.
A 30.30, .270, or a 30.06 would be a nice general purpose rifle, but not the right gun for waterfowl. Pretty impressive though, if you can take out a flying goose with a rifle... I did see a show where an old man was shooting airborne asprin tablets with a .22

I read an article that said gun sales are way up and prices will, if not already be going up also. You mgiht want to go ahead and make that purchase soon if you really are serious about it.
