I have met a handful of people in Lexington who had moved there from California. All were happy with their moves, although none of them had moved from LA.

No, wait, I take that back. My uncle was from LA, and although he and my aunt moved back and forth a few times between Kentucky and California, they have spent much more time in California, and have settled in CA permanently.

We are Kentuckians who have moved to LA, and love it. A friend came out to LA with us, and lasted only one month - moved back to Kentucky.

I agree with Kentuckydad that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I did tear up as I drove away from Central Kentucky, but it is also beautiful in LA. Life can be good in many places.

Nah, there's no culture in Louisville or Cincy or St Louis or Nashville or Memphis, etc, etc.

And as far as some in Cali making 50-100K/year...I hope you were not bragging. My wife is from Cali and that will get you almost nothing in many areas. Oh and when it comes to the beauty of an area, there is no right or wrong. One person could love being on a farm, while another could think NYC was the most beautiful place on earth.
You are right and because La is bigger that does not make it better ,there is more diversity, culture, balance there are country parts of LA but you have options ky doe not seem to offer much of that OPTIONS , and this turned in to and argument about a LA native who moved to KY and I gave MY opionion an assessment of this place it is fair to say I have that right and that's what happens people from KY want to take your rights from you .It is you guys who think we think LA is "bigger" so it is "better" is that what you use to decide things; YES you do, everything is so like people trying to talk underwater and want people to understand what they are talking about ,Memphis has so much culture and so on the move , Atlanta, St.Louis,North Carolina, Virginia , it is KY that has not made any efforts in that movement .Even Arkansas is more ready than KY it's like the state is at a stand still and the people have to stay still mentally with it,change is so good but for whatever reason KY doesn't seem to want to , and that's ok , (if they do not want to ) but i was informing a person thinking of moving here that this place is not on the move at all . I mean can i get some sidewalks , some street lights so i can see while driving down fern valley/hurstbourne road that says wath out for deers but no street lights to see .

Well, our house in Long Beach sold and closed on July 16, my husband's retirement party and last day of work was on the 17th and we moved on July 18. We drove to KY, visiting relatives along the way and had a marvelous time. Two days after we arrived here, we bought a house in Hunting Creek and all the papers are signed, the inspection is over and it is a done deal...we move in soon.

We love KY - we love the beauty, the lack of traffic, the weather (much more temperate that we anticipated), the price of nearly everything is less to some degree than we are used to paying. Over the last week we have bought furniture, new appliances carpeting and flooring, met with the real estate attorney, opened our bank account, gone out to lovely meals, drove country roads, etc....we have dealt with nothing but polite and helpful people - people wave to us as we drive around Prospect neighborhoods - we are so loving this place...of course, we are happy and satisfied to begin with so that helps I guess and more importantly, we treat everyone we meet with kindness and a smile and I think that really helps when you are trying to get settled in a new place ....... we are truly pleased we moved here. Carry on.
PLEASEEEEE Keep updating us. I will be in KY next month to check out some areas. I do not know when my wife and I will move, but we can't wait to leave California.

Mind you this is not to belittle California as a bad place. We are simply tired of the Calif life style. I have left Calif 3 times and this is the first time I feel I won't want to return. Maybe I will later, but who knows. The Calif of today is not the Calif I grew up in, just as KY of today is not the KY of 40 years ago.

The idea that the grass is greener, somewhere else, is universal, but I suspect in KY it is "bluer". Hope to find out. If nothing else I have always grown as a person every time I have moved anywhere. Those that can only bad mouth an area simply have closed their eyes to the good. I look forward to living in KY and coming to know the fine people who will be my neighbors. Any who aren't fine, will simply be treated just as I have the less than fine folk of California, I meet from time to time.

No place is perfect, but from what I have seen KY is going to be a nice place to live, for however long I will be there.

Keep us posted on your experiences good and bad. At least with the bad we can see how you cope, giving us a head start.

Leonard:

I think you will enjoy Kentucky especially if you approach it with an open mind. Life there is a whole differnet "gear" but it will grow on you, I am sure.
California is a wonderful state and I have been there many times. Ojai Valley is one of my favorite vacation places, but I wouldn't want to live there.
I have travelled extensively during my life and visited some 40 of our states, plus a few other countries in central & south America as well as eastern Europe. I have chosen to retire in Kentucky when the time comes. I don't know what it is, but I can actually kick off my shoes & relax there.

Dig~

I dig at Murray, KY all the time, but would not trade it for Cali. Hell, the taxes alone would kill you in LA.

But Kentucky is so beautiful - I grew up on a farm outside of Cincinnati and always dreamed of a place with woods, a creek, and rolling hills. If your daughter-in-law chose Kentucky - then maybe it really might work for me.
It definitely has changed, TheCork. We have less open farm land and a lot more concrete than my first visit here. You can still find 190-250 acres with a 3 to 4 bedroom house for less than $400k. The place my d-i-l loves has a 5 bedroom mediteranian style house with geothermal heat/air, 4 stall garage, 2 barns, 192 acres (90 old growth woods), 12 acre pond, fully fenced. It's near Sonora though. BUT it's only $396k.
Louisville and Bowling Green would be about an hour or 1.5 hours. Nashville is close enough, as are Cincinati, Memphis, and even Indianapolis.
She really loved the way she was treated here. People she never met hugged her and thanked her for visiting because she was my d-i-l . That was the only reason they needed. When we went boating and my motor broke down, she was amazed that the first passing boater towed us back to the launch area (opposite direction of where he was going) and refused to take any thing for his gas or time.
Like Cattknap says, anyplace can be nice if you open your mind. Yours sounds open.

I recently moved from California about 5 months ago. Kentucky is a very beautiful state. Cost of living is low. Opportunities abound. I feel they need to add more shopping, and more jobs. If you are moving here for a new start. This is the place to be. We welcome you here.

Default Moved to ky from ca

We lived in Orange County and Riverside County in California and moved to Kentucky 2 years ago. We live in Elizabethtown which is about 40 miles or so from Louisville. We love it here. My sister and brother in law have retired here, and I will be retiring in the next 5 years. We love the slower pace, the affordable living, the 4 seasons and no GRAFITTI

I grew up in Orange County and now live in Riverside County. IF Orange County were as it was when I was a kid you could not get me to live anywhere but there. However no place stays the same. I look forward to a new location and making new friends and enjoying all that KY has to offer, if we move there. Gonna move to either KY or TN.
