As usual, jcm and I don't see eye to eye. I lived in the Henderson area for over 25 years. If people in the surrounding counties don't want to go to Evansville Henderson is where they go. Henderson is a friendly place. Henderson has been a stopping point for the Delta Queen riverboat. They would dock and passengers would get off to shop and see the sights. Congress is shutting down the riverboats now but this was a popular stop. People in the area would come and listen to the music from the carillons. If you wear any Columbia sportswear, it may have come from their factory in Henderson County. An Evansville based power company is proposing a $210 million plant to convert trash to ethanol built on the Henderson/WebsterCounty line. If built they will use 300 construction workers and employ 165 people when at full production.
Henderson has the W.C. handy Blues and Bar-b-que Festival in June. This is one of the largest free music festivals in the country. Several days of almost nonstop music and more food than you'd know what to do with! lol
If you want to check what all is going on year round, check it out at Henderson County Tourist Commission, Henderson, KY. If you like to "pick and grin", go to the website and click on events. On the 3rd Thursday of each month there is a Bluegrass music jam session.
And, jcm, yes there were people who didn't want the Walmart Superstore. Henderson isn't the only place across the US that didn't want one. But what most of them were complaining about was the location. They were building it at a bad location traffice wise. People thought it was going to be hard to get in and out at an intersection that was known for accidents to begin with.
Stagnant? I don't think so!

I get your point about the extra hour of daylight, I will keep that in mind since lately I have been bringing that issue up to my spouse, I don't like it getting dark so soon either! I never would have thought about that one However, with it as cold as it is here in winter, even if there were an additional hour of daylight I wouldn't be spending it outside doing anything
My understanding is that the older one gets here, the less tax breaks they get. However, I do believe that will be changing due to some tax law changes coming. The cost of living here isn't all that bad, but winter sure is!
As far as property taxes, I can much better then having to pay around $3,000 a year for a house worth $160,000.

You & jcm both are the exact reason why I'd love as much input as possible, everyone has their opinions. I guess it's a good thing we have so many choices in life
Even with all that we do have, it seems most of us still find something to gripe about.
I'm just going to take in everything I read, then form my own opinions anyhow. A persons experiences has lots to do with their opinions. How can someone who has never left the area they live in have much to compare it to?? I've always wondered how anyone can enjoy living in NY city, yet look how many people do!
I appreciate anything you have to say

I lived in Union County, right next to Henderson, for 28 years. Moved this year to my wife's place in Cadiz. Once you get settled in Kentucky, wherever you decide, come down our way and check out Kentucky and Barkley Lakes and the Land Between the Lakes. Lake Barkley Resort Park is the largest state park in Kentucky. Nice place to relax in the summer!

But we haven't decided yet whether it will be Kentucky, Indiana or Tn. It's all still up in the air until summer vacation is over & we've gotten a feel for all the potential choices I'm pretty sure any place we decide on will have a slower pace then what we have now, even though we're fine with the pace here.

As far as Henderson goes... I'm not concerned about the job situation, for us it will be NA. I'm not sure if it's big enough to have the things I like to have close by. Being on the river sounds nice though.
The BBQ festival would be something to go to for the food, but the music scene really isn't my style. That's something that might be a bit of a problem in all the cities I'm interested in though I'm more of a top 40's kinda person, or R&B and Hip Hop. I can handle a little country music, but not a lot.
I'm also not sure that there will be very many homes available for us to choose from in our price range. It's just an alternative to E'ville for a bit of a slower pace, if we prefer that area over the others.

You should give disc golf a try, I consider it hiking with a purpose. I got hooked on it from the beginning Paducah isn't a city I'd choose to retire to.There are lots of disc golf courses everywhere that are busy, some are just better then others. If it were just a matter of playing disc golf, I'd stay right where I am now, our home course is only 10 min. away & we love it! Sure hope I can find another course that I can appreciate the same way!
Henderson & Owensboro Ky, as well as Evansville have now been deleted from our options due to the airport fares being much higher.

dlk33 -- Why do you say "Paducah isn't a city I'd choose to retire to?"

Sue Fox...
We have four other cities of interest that seem to meet our wants/needs better then Paducah does. Paducah is listed 7/10 for violent crime and 7/10 for property crime. With a population of around 25,000 that isn't so good. Bowling Green with a population of a bit over 53,000 scores a 6 & 7/10. Also, looking at the comfort index Paducah is at a 28 and the other four cities we're interested in are 34 & up. Higher is better, meaning more comfortable during the summer, related to the humidity. Those are the main reasons.

Where are you getting your stats? I can tell you our stats on city-data are way wrong. Those numbers sound high for Paducah.
