I grew up in Western Kentucky and spent a lot of my life there. When I went away to the service as a young man no matter where I went somehow they came around to calling me Kaintuck. So i adopted it and I am still fond of the handle. Kentuckians are proud people, savvy people, salt of the earth people. Wherever I have been I have been able to wade into the crowd and hold my own. That is because of a nurtured upbringing of the basic traditional things that make any person a cut above. Work ethic, respect for others, well grounded intellectualism that speaks to the fundamentals of life that doesn't require a Kennedy pretentiousness to succeed.
Furthermore, Kentuckians tend to vote Republican. How dumb can they be?

I was born and raised in Columbus Ohio, but both sides of my family are from Eastern KY. Dad's side from Warfield, in Martin County, and Mom's side from Johnson and Magoffin Counties. I spent every weekend and each summer in Salyersville in Magoffin County. She ran a truckstop on the Mountain Parkway for 25 years all by herself on an 8th grade education. EVERYONE but my parents still live there, and I found myself enrolled at Morehead State University in Rowan County as soon as I graduated high school. I'm here in Ohio again but plan to move back there as soon as I can find a decent job. I have always felt as if I'm "home" as soon as I cross the river. I've never met simpler people, and by that I mean, no hidden agendas...Most of them are just hardworking, honest people that would give you the shirt off their back. Just because there isn't a Starbucks on the corner, or even within 40 miles people freak out over how "uncivilized" it is. I was so angry when I read on a few threads people putting the eastern kentucky people down...Obviously they didn't do a whole lot of conversating with them...or maybe was afraid to sit down and do so for fear of wrinkling his designer 'britches" I am proud to have solid E. Ky roots. I wouldn't have it any other way. That's God's country.

I have dear friends that moved to the Winchester area. They are originally from San Diego. They've been there for a couple months now, and they call me all the time, telling me how wonderful it is, and how NICE the people are. They said it's a breath of fresh air (compared to CA ), and they love it, and most important, there's no road rage. I've heard from others too, that Kentuckians are very nice folks. Also, when you say "hello" to someone in KY, they actually respond back, that doesn't happen here in CA.

Schtyk, my dad has several funny stories about being in WWII. if you're from western Kentucky then I know you have heard of the little town of Coldwater. My dad used to tell his buddies that he knew a place where you could scald a hog in Coldwater. Said one sergeant never could figure it out! lol

Actually, sorry to say I don't know where that is However I am acquainted with lickskillet and monkeys eyebrow and my roots are a little crossroads called Bucksville. Just a little spot of ground that holds the world togeather but definately where God stitched it up when he was done.

Coldwater is between Mayfield and Murray, just down the road from Stella. Monkey's Eyebrow I've heard of, but not Bucksville or Lickskillet.

I went through there Saturday. Visited my parents in Mayfield and decided to go home through Murray. Didn't know they had the boat and outdoor show free on campus. Enjoyed that a while. Used to take the long way to Murray, taking 464. Backusburg hill used to be a big thing! Took my sons down there about a year ago and it's hardly a hill any more!
