I haven't seen anything about it, but if it's about the Flat Gap area (I'm in Blaine, not far from Flat Gap) as another poster said, I'm probably not going to be amused by it. Though I'm not a fan of anything that perpetuates the stereotypes, which these "extreme poverty" type specials always do. For once I'd like to see something that shows the upsides of rural Kentucky/Appalachia life.

Most of the time, when they come to Pike Co and surrounding Counties they choose a person to take them to the remotest ,back-woodsy, head of the holler place they can find then they seek out a very unfortunate poor soul with little education, and in the direst straits of poverty and focus on them Sort of like if I would go to a big city and want to stereotype that town..I would pay a vulnerable person to escort me to the filthiest, most crime stricken, poverty infested area and then find the poorest, least fortunate, toothless person I could and THAT would be the theme of my movie ..I will watch this show, but will change the channel as soon as I see it will be like most of the others...

When I first joined this forum 2 years ago I was appalled and sickened by a few people who continuously made fun of Pikeville, told lies about the good people here and seemed to follow me with hate posts for my county and some of the others in the eastern side of Ky...I am so very grateful that that has pretty much changed now I now see positive remarks, beautiful pictures and really good posts about us..Many of us who live here are here because we choose to be here Some people enjoy life in or near the metro areas, others like myself prefer the beauty, the solitude of nature and the friendship of a small rural town..I enjoy visiting Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati, but love coming home to my little corner of Appalachia

Keep in mind Diane Sawyer is from Louisville so she will give Kentucky he benefit of doubt here. I don't think she would be as "brutal" on the stereotypes as say, Geraldo would be for example.
As for Pikeville, I think a certain former Governor made it his mission in office to help that place out. Seems to have worked. Heck, they got a new arena out of it even if the unemployment in some western Kentucky counties has hovered in the double digits for years now. Shame.
Paul Patton anyone??
Seriously though, Pikeville is nice.

Well, considering many people in the "Big Cities" have family in the rural parts........ Most of the slamming comes from the outside. People who have passed through, visited, whatever. Notice I said "most" though. That's not to say that there are those in Louisville and Lexington, etc. that don't take shots at rural Kentucky.
Kentucky is 90-95% rural population so keep that in mind to.

Diane Sawyer is from Glasgow. Most people I know do not slam anywhere else in Kentucky and those that do just don't know better

Miss Blue says--------"others like myself will prefer the beauty"-----
I'm guessing what the Diane Sawyer documentary will show is-------"you can't eat the beauty"
Without income, times will be tough.
(watching the preview, it was mostly geared to answering the question--------"how can we help the kids"-----as some of it was filmed at schools .

KY is NOT anywhere near 95% rural. Come on now! Nearly a 1/5 of the states population lives in the CITY of Louisville.
Check my new thread about the Diane Sawyer special.
