My "Hanson" son, called about 1 this morning. Said his cell phone started working, but we still can't get a call out. He said my "Sturgis" son and their mother had come to stay with them for a few days. He said there was something about the water system in town.
The roads are clearing pretty good. The salt and calcium chloride melt the ice down to 23 degrees, so everything blacktop, that I can see, is cleard, except where the tree limbs are hanging too low to drive under.
All I can say about getting phone calls in is to hang on. I know the phone compnay is probably working their butts off along with all the other crews trying to get the trees off the limbs and trying to find the problem.

Thanks for the updates...

My parents who are in their 80s live on the north side of Madisonville...just past the high school on the way to Hanson. Their neighbor watches out for them and let them borrow a generator so they have heat. Havent yet contacted them as they have no cell phone.

My son called at 1:30 this morning and again while ago from Hanson. They got cell phone service during the night but no electricity. They are driving to Hoptown for groceries. He said nothing open in Madisonville.

When we couldn't get my parents on the phone the first day we called the police and asked if they could check on them. They called us back and said all is well. Dont' know if Madisonville police will do that or not but it's just an idea!

Long Distant phone line are out, AT&T is dead, Verizon I think as spotty LD, long phone service comes and goes, water comes and goes and is under a boil order, power is still out in Graves and from what I understand in addition to the 1000's of down power lines the main transfer line from KY Dam TVA went down in the lake and a sky crane has been called in to get it out ... power could be out for weeks, with luck power back to services in a week or so. Still to early to tell.
Gas is hard to find, C and D battery's gone, no mail, no paper, nothing. No kerosene around, bottle water hard to find, Paducah is getting some power back and you get food and water and fuel there ... provided you have enough gas to get there.
I'm doing fine as is the family, we were ready but I'm afraid a lot of people weren't, especially the older folks that just couldn't get ready.

I'll update more as I have power (generator) and can get online.

I have not heard of any reported deaths so that's good.

I just heard in the news Mayfield could be without power for 10 days or longer, Graves country 21-30 days.

Thanks...

I was able to call my parents via regular phone lines this evening about 6 pm...they cannot call out. The phone line was very scratchy. Now here is what they said they heard over the radio station which is on generator power... Kentucky Utilities said the main power transmission line that runs from Louisville to Paducah is down and they are working to repair it. Until that is up no communities which gets power from that line can get electricity. It may take up to 3 weeks for all communities that gets service from this line to get electricity.

All of Madisonville is without power and any thing open that has power is due to generators. Gasoline stations that were open and on generator power soon ran out of gas....and my parents neighbors had to go to Henderson to get gas to fill up his generator, which they are allowing my folks to tap into.

All 6 trees in my parents yard are severely damaged and the National Guard is going through town with chain saws to open roads that are blocked. Tree damage varies from just a few limbs to whole sections of trees down.

My mom who was born and raised in Hopkins county and who is 82 said she has never seen anything like it in her lifetime...you have no idea the damage. This is their Katrina.

Dan

Well it's morning I survived the night, thankfully my wife watched to fire last night so I finally got some sleep for the first time in 2 days. I will not leave a fire unattended, I think I'll send the family to my Dad's in Henderson they have power, I'll stay behind and man the fort, I don't think I'd have to worry about looters, this really isn't that kind of area but longer this drags out the worse people will get. So far everyone is still very upbeat and pleasant and helping each other as much as they can, from sharing water and food to fuel, I took 4 gallons of kerosene I had that I wasn't going to use, I don't have a kerosene heater, but a older lady I know did bid kerosene can not be found so I took it to her and got her heater going after a long lecture from me about safety ... don't sleep in the same room with it, don't leaving running while your asleep, don't turn it up to high ... etc etc. I don't want to hear about her house burning down,

Well still no AT&T cell service but I DID have LONG DISTANCE this morning!! So I could call out and had me Dad call back so we can get incoming LD too.

NO more word on anything else, gotta go I have to conserve Fuel ... my neighbor is running his 24/7 I think that is going to to prove to be unwise. They use about $40 in fuel a day, I'm cheap.

Every one be safe .. that's all for now ... still no FEMA, everything so far is being handle locally and by farmer clearing roads with tractor and us 4X4 guys.

I just heard in the news these is the worst ice storm in KY history ... I don't doubt it blows 1993 away!

Well NEW PREZ .... will this be your Katrina? Sure looking like it, just seems us country KY folks are better prepared and behaved ... (Sorry I digress)

Well good to know that some of your guys family member's are ok and you heard from them!

Davart, I know he signed the federal disaster paperwork on Wed night/Thurs morning; so we should see Nat guard and FEMA rolling in soon with supplies and help. (fingers crossed anyway!)

And you are spot on about us country folk helping each other when we need it; some of our neighbors are city slickers and they have been bitchy and rude this whole ordeal, while the rest of us are helping where we can. Things like this mess, either bring out the worst or best in people. Usually the worst, but so far from what I have seen, it's been positive; and I am thrilled about that, as anyone should be. It's the complainers who should have their butts kicked for being jerks.

Oh, and for those in Daviess, McLean, Hopkins, Union, and Webster counties if you can read this and have no kerosene, there are 2-3 places still in Henderson that have plenty (you might have to wait in line a bit, of course); but there is food, water, gas, and kerosene in most stores and gas stations.

Sureway eastgate is open will a good stock, and Palmer's gas station has kerosene as does the Ez-shop #3. There are unfortunately no D cell batteries in town that I could find, lol. Still candles left, but they might be the more expensive ones.
