Default The Appalachia you DIDN'T see in the Diane Sawyer 20/20 show

Diane Sawyer's special report on 20/20 about poverty in Eastern Kentucky made it look like 95% of the people there are drug addicts that sit around smoking dope and singing bluegrass music.

There is another side of the region not portrayed on the show: it's diversity, modern, and even booming areas.

Pikeville KY

Ashland KY

Middlesboro KY

Harlan KY

Don't be too upset, Censusdata. That sort of thing is standard operating procedure for the mainstream media for any area in "flyover country" (i.e. anything not in the Washington DC - Boston corridor or California). According to them, everyone in flyover country is a walking stereotype.

Middlesboro is very nice looking and Harlan reminds me of PA where I grew up. It's a good looking area; I'd go there.

NEPA gets the same sort of negative attention. A lot of people think that it's all culm banks, mining shanties.

There's always another side to the story.

Diane Sawyer is from Louisville...so maybe she feels that Louisville is a little above the rest of Kentucky - and her view of everything outside Louisville is one of "rednecks, poverty, and drug addicts?

She's not from Louisville, she started her career in Louisville but she's from Glasgow KY.

Her family moved to Louisville when she was a child, and she graduated from high school there. To me, that translates to being "from" somewhere.

Sorry people, technically Diane Sawyer is from Glasgow, KY. But her formative years (and attitude/personality) are from Louisville.

To the OP:
I don't see anything wrong with smoking weed and singing bluegrass music. Sure beats the stressful materialistic rat race that most people pursue.
