I agree with a lot of the posts here concerning this. I was born in Owensboro and lived there untill I was 21. I still go there at least once and often 2 or 3 times a month. When it comes to BBQ, I grew up on Moonlite. But since Mom and Dad Bosley died it seems to have become quite inconsistant. Sometimes it is just as good as it always was and sometimes, well it just isn't the same. The buffet is very good with a great variety. However of late, I have started going to Old Hickory. The mutton is good, it is has a different taste, I believe it has a sweeter taste but it is good. If Moonlite would stay the way it was when Mom and Pop Bosley were running the place, it would be the place I would always go.
Whether or not it is the BBQ CAPITAL or not I would say that, as others have said, is arguable. I live in Memphis Tennessee now and Memphis likes to claim that title. Memphis hosts the International BBQ contest every year during Memphis In May and it is huge. But down here, pork is king. Go to Texas and it is BBQ Brisket, (beef). There was a time when Kansas City Missouri was considered the place to go for BBQ. All are good. Mutton is NOT very well known outside of areas such as Owensboro and southern Indiana. If you are in the foyer area of Moonlite, there are reprints of articles about how Owensboro came to have the BBQ heritage it has. It has a lot to do with the people who were the early settlers and that sheep was the predominant livestock raised. It is only natural that sheep would be a common meat to eat.
I love to get mutton when I go back there because I can't get it anyplace else. Mention Mutton down here and they look at you like you have another hole in your head.
As a added note, no matter where you go in Owensboro for your BBQ, be sure to try some Burgoo. Believe me you will love it. Don't let the name scare you, it is really just a very good soup. Again something else nobody down here has ever heard of.

We hosted a derby party here in Huntsville, AL last year and made a pot of burgoo. Everyone loved it. The funny thing is that most locals from this area thought is was Brunswick stew, which is a thick local soup made much the same way as burgoo. The recipes are very similar (in that there doesn't seem to be much of a consistent recipe), except Brunswick stew doesn't have mutton.

My husband loves mutton and we make the drive to Owensboro for barbeque for that reason every now and then. Nobody does mutton in Bowling Green, and actually even though we have barbeque places none of it is as good as in Owensboro for some reason. I love Moonlite buffet but I have noticed the inconsistency in the barbeque as you mentioned.
