Is Owensboro the Barbeque Capital??
During early June I am planning a 2-3 day trip to Southern Indiana. I have heard from friends and people on this forum that Owensboro is the Barbeque Capital of the world. Is this true? I know Owensboro has a Barbeque festival at some point in the summer could someone tell me when it is? If Owensboro is truly the Barbeque Capital then I would love to go and have lunch in Owensboro one day during my trip!

That is the city's official motto - obviously whether it is actually the world's bbq capitol is a matter of opinion

Owensboro has so much potential. I enjoied a visit there last fall when I was on my way home from St. Louis. But it could be so much more attractive to visitors than it is.

Owensboro is the BBQ capital only in the mind of those that live in Owensboro.

BBQ is the National Food, but like our accents, each region has its preferred style. Owensboro is unique in the use of mutton (older sheep rather than lamb). Mutton offers a stronger taste similar to how dark beer is more robust than American style light beer. Even the mutton preference is beginning to bend to pork and chicken in Owensboro.
Tourists and Democrats like Moonlite BBQ. This is due to the owner's long time political activity.
Although my family is mostly Democrat, they tend to like Old Hickory better. Best time to hit Owensboro is when a Catholic Parish is having a "picnic".

BBQ has a political affiliation? That is new to me. Really good BBQ crosses the aisle.

There is a lot of good Barbeque in Owensboro. I love Moonlite, but I didn't know if was for Democrats...now I have to rethink the whole thing...lol. I better not tell my husband because he loves their mutton.

We've decided that we will go to the Moonlite BBQ!! Thanks for your guys's recommendation. I looked at their location and their menu online. right off of Indiana 121 that would give us easy access back to Indiana and their menu is delicious!!

I agree... Just having some fun with local customs and idiosyncrasies. Don't ring the bell if you don't want me to come to lunch!
Seriously, the best BBQ is found at the church picnics... they bust a gut to do it right once a year.
