Default Help Oldham County/crestwood Newbies!!!

My family and I just closed on a house in Crestwood, KY. We are from Cincinnati and have a an apartment near the Summit for 6 months, but we did not explore Crestwood until we started looking for homes. We wanted Oldham County because we have 3 kids and that is about all we knew. We had to relocate because of my husbands job with a very small company, so we really have no contacts and resources for referrals as far as getting some work done around the house. We are trying to find some referrals for some reliable and reasonable companies or handypersons to help us make some improvements at our new house. Two moves in 6 months has not left us with a ton of money, but we would like some painting done, yard work, and some small plumbing work. If anyone could help us out, if they know someone reliable we would really appreciate it.

Viacincy, welcome to the forum, and welcome to Louisville. Please be careful not to post the same thread several times. I do not have a good referral for a handy man, but your best bet is to probably chat it up with some people around your area. Perhaps you could start meeting friends at the Summit and explain your sitiation. People are friendly here, and someone will have advice. This is usually the best way to find a handyman IMO.

As for your move to Crestwood, its a great area, but don't rule out the city of Louisville because of schools. Despite the "hearsay," Louisville/JCPS are very good, especially in the magnets. Also, you will find Louisville a much cleaner, safer city than Cincinnati. This is certainly more conducive to raising a family. In fact, Louisville was named America's top city for relocating families. The amenities and quality of life is high, and the traffic and prices are low. Check out the city website-- www.louisvilleky.gov. It is quite informative and actually won an award last year for being the number 3 city website in the country. What part of Cincinnati did you move from? I am quite familiar with that city.

Hey thanks for the information I will try chatting up the locals to see what they have to say. I spent most of my life in Hyde Park and Mount Lookout area. My husband and I then moved to Northern Kentucky for a few years. Erlanger and Florence due to work. My whole family still lives in Hyde Park, and my in-laws live in the Fairfield area. We really like Louisville so far!!! Looking forward to art festival in Cherokee Triangle ? I was reading about that online, and it really caught my attention.

If you liked Hyde Park, you should strongly consider the Cherokee Triangle area as well as other parts of the Highlands. The area is similar except it offers a more eclectic vibe and substantially more locally owned retail close by. It is also more affordable in parts compared to Hyde Park. As a downside, the area lacks the chain retail you would find in Rookwood, but who needs that with cool independent boutiques on Bardstown Road and high end, unique restaurants? Besides, the Highlands are only a 10 minute trip to St Matthews which has chains galore if you know the shortcuts through Cherokee and Seneca park. It is the areas around these two parks that makes Louisville a special place. Another great place to live with very high property values is off of Trevilian way between Bardstown and Newburg. There is even an area on Newburg just north of 264 that contains new homes in developments that look like new suburbs for all practical purposes. A street called Sylvan Way would be an example of this. The point is, Louisville is a safer environment than what you see in Cincinnati and you can and should live in the city itself. Also, since it is a county school system, it is a much larger school district than Cincinnati and the quality of schools seems to be better. There is racial tension in Louisville, but absolutely nothing like in Cincinnati. The riots a few years back in Cincinnati are an example of tensions that do not occur around here.

The Triangle art fair is good, but not the top one in the area. As you may know, the St James Court art show occurs in October in Old Louisville, and is one of the finest and largest in the country. Sunshine magazine rated it number 3 for art shows last year, and it draw artists from all over the country and even all over the world. Speaking of which, you should tour Old Louisville. Although the neighborhood is mixed income in parts, there are still some awesome old mansions that sell for a pretty penny. Many have been converted to multiplex apartments while the latest trend is seeing many of them split into several high end condos. There are also lots of college students and gays in this area. Many of the older/less updated properties have section 8 tenants, which makes for a nice and diverse area. The area does not have a terrible crime rate, but car break ins can be quite a nuissance. This is not a bad area where you would see murders, though. There are a few corners in the district well known for prostituton and drug dealing (specifially 4th and Oak), but the problems are not too bad, and there are even homes in this vicinity selling for 500k. It is by no means an area like Over the Rhine where one needs to be cautious even driving through. Louisville does not really have car jackings and things like that. There is lots more, but I hope this helps.

wow thanks so much for that information. That is exactly the kind of information I wanted but have not been able to find on my own. I love diversity, mixed with an urban area, yet still supports individuals running their own shops and stores, trying to compete with the big retail chains. I will especially check out St James Court art show, my sisters have been, and all tell me its fantastic. I will explore all of the neighborhoods you are speaking of, and will try and locate those backroads through Cherokee and Senaca park. I have driven to those areas on the expressway and it takes some time from the Summit area. Louisville has a lot to offer. I never knew. You hit Hyde Park on the nose. I love and miss that area, so I appreciate the advice.
