In Western Kentucky I would definitely choose Owensboro. My favorite place to live. As opposed to a previous post we found the community to be very open to newcomers. It is all in how you choose to get involved. The school system there is very good as rated by Kentucky standards and others. Our children started school there and those experiences helped to shape them into successful young men. Many denominations of churhces are very active and have full programs for families.
The Daviess County school system is a very school system to work for, there are also the Owensboro City Schools that I don't really know much about and a large Catholic School sytem is based in Owensboro. I would move back to Owensboro in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose. On the river, my guys are hunters and fishermen. Arts center, symphony, nice mall, good restaurants, community and family oriented. There are two private college Kentucky Weseyan and Brescia, great community college and I believe there is still a cooperative with Western-you'd have to double check me on that to be sure. We lived in Henderson for several years. I found it to be a closed community to outsiders. Have you considered Cadiz? Lovely community. Nice school system-the superintendent is great. It is at the edge of the Land Between the Lakes, Lake Barkeley, Kentucky Lake area. This is in Trigg County. |

Im not sure if you are still interested in this topic but I am from Henderson and I can tell you a lot about it...
Its a pretty small town with only one high school but it has two middle schools and a few elementary schools... there's most always a job available in the school system. Many people here are interested in hunting and fishing so that's not really an issue. As far as entertainment goes...you would probably want to go to Evansville. (no movie theaters, malls, etc) However Evansville is only about a 20 minutes away. Most of the people here are very welcoming. |

If you are looking for a smaller town you might look at Cadiz, KY. With I24 we are close to a lot of larger towns but we are the gateway to the lakes, Barkley Lake and Kentucky Lake. Hunting and fishing abound! Small friendly community where antique shops line the downtown area. But close enough to larger towns for shopping, restaurants and employment.
Check out http://barkleylake.com Our schools are all on 1 campus check out: http://trigg.k12.ky.us And we set between Hopkinsville Community College check out: http://hopcc.kctcs.net (broken link) And Murray State College check out: hhttp://murraystate.edu If you would like to know more about this quiet, friendly community just let me know. |

Clean, safe, great university, near lakes, but somewhat isolated. Best choice for small city with amenities Cadiz Clean, safe, near lakes, less isolated ( on 1-24 ) but very small and you need to get to Hopkinsville for a major hospital. Best choice for small city Paducah Unmatched arts, entertainment, restaurants, great shopping, lots of history, the river culture, good museums, but crime becomes an issue and not very close to a big city. Best choice for shopping and nightlife. Big time entertainment: a casino: a horse track :you get the picture Hopkinsville Extremely urban for a city of 30,000. Crime is an issue; parts of the city are wonderful, parts are unsafe. Shopping is so so but because it is so near Clarksville, Tenn, and Nashville, Tenn, it really doesn't matter. Overall it's not too bad. Hey, it's big enough to have a Starbucks! Remember, Hopkinsville is 8 miles from one of the largest military bases in the world. That explains the urban feel. Hopkinsville is a military town. Best choice if you want to live in a small city but you want to go to the big cities quickly (Hopkinsville to downtown Clarksville 20 minutes )or (to downtown Nashville 60 minutes) Clarksville has a metro area of about 150,000:Nashville 1.5 Million Owensboro Much like Paducah but being off a major interstate makes it feel a little isolated. A great small city. Bowling Green Clean, progressive, a major university, great shopping, close to Nashville and Louisville. Bowling Green is tough to beat but it's starting to feel those growth pains i.e. traffic, lines, crowded places, and crime with growth is on the upswing. Bowling Green will be a big city in 20-30 years. Madisonville A big small town (good shopping for it's size) Henderson ditto Madisonville but also near Evansville Princeton Just a clean small town Mayfield Same as Princeton Greenville & Central City I'll leave that area for you to explore on your own. Hello!
Henderson resident checking in. Henderson is a cute little community located on the Ohio River. I enjoy living in Henderson and the people are very nice and welcoming. However, economically speaking, I work in Evansville, Indiana, to make decent money. Evansville holds many of the higher paying jobs, as well as local entertainment. The great thing is, Henderson living is less expensive than Evansville. There are also good colleges around the area, like the University of Southern Indiana (a 30 minute commute for me), Henderson Community College, an extention of Murray State University, University of Evansville, Ivy Tech (Evansville), ITT Tech (Evansville), Brescia University (Owensboro), and Owensboro Community College. I personally am not very fond of Owensboro. Living outside of Evansville gives you the major stores for shopping, restaurants, as well as jobs, while Henderson and the surrounding areas give one the ability to live comfortably in the country. Hunting, fishing, and all that jazz is huge around here! My huband has the Indiana and Kentucky permits for hunting and fishing so he can get the best of both worlds! |

Owensboro has everything you described. Some of the best hunting and fishing anywhere. New performing arts center, new greenbelt with miles and miles of bike trails, beautiful river frontage with $40,000,000 (thats millions) improvements started. Great community with 4 colleges. new library, 4 museums, Lower than average cost of living. Vibrant economy with low unemployment. You will love the life style. 3rd largest city in Kentucky and less than 3 hours to 4 major cities. One days drive to gulf coast, Chicago or to the east coast. 4 distinct seasons.

to ME6311: You ain't never been to Houston,Tx, now have you? I like O-bro, its a good place to live and work, regardless of your skin color, and oh boy, am I sensitive to that! In fact, all of Daviess county is top notch, when it comes to open minds and hearts. Although not so close to Evansville as Henderson, Owensboro has always seemed more modern and cleaner to me, but Henderson is okay, too, I guess.

Now, unless you have lived in Muhlenberg County for a good period of time, I would reserve my judgements about it until I actually had a real clue about it if I was you. It's certainly not as bad as you make it out to be that's for sure. Trust me, there's worse. ![]() |
