Paducah kentucky
Hi all, my nephew has been offered 3 jobs and one is from a place in paducah.
Can you tell me what the socializing lifestyle is like for a 26 yr old single man is. What kind of mood the town has and is it a good place for young professionals.
Also, what the cost of living may be like. Cost of a loaf of bread, gallon of milk, utilities, taxes this sort of thing.
Anything else you can tell me.
Thank you

Most people on here will paint a perfect picture of any area that is asked about, but I am not one of them. First let me address your questions.
The cost of living in Paducah compared to other places in the nation is pretty low. However, you do have to take into account that there is a state income tax and Paducah also charges a mind-blowing 2% income tax for themselves. And don't even ask about the corrupt city government that runs the place. Paducah has the highest cost of living in this end of Kentucky. Utilities are fairly low and food is tax-free in Kentucky, which is nice. If you are worried about crime, Paducah has a higher then tha national average crime rate, but I have never felt unsafe anywhere in Paducah.
As far as being a goof fit for a 26 y/o male...not really. Paducah is now known as "Quilt City USA". Now if he was 76 y/o...maybe. There is not much nightlife in Paducah, just a few bars and clubs that can be found in any city. St. Louis or Nashville would be the cities of choice for a single guy to go out on the town. The people in Paducah are friendly, as with most towns in this area. I'm not sure what you mean by the "mood of the town", but Paducah has a DECLINING population and there is a reason why. Paducah is a smoke and mirrors town, meaning it looks bigger then it really is. They have a mall and tons of chain stores and chain restaurants. It is the shopping destination for the region, although they now sport many empty stores while other towns are getting new ones.
Bottom line:
THE GOOD:
Overall low cost of living
Nice downtown riverfront area
Artist relocation program
Plenty of shopping and restaurants
THE BAD:
2% city income tax
High crime rate
Not really much to do
Declining population
As with anywhere, it has it's good and bad. I am curious as to the other cities your nephew has in the running.

Knoxville will have more crime than Paducah because it's much larger. Paducah is a nice town with lots of history.

Everywhere has history. Paducah is NOT a good fit for a young single guy. As far as crime, sure. Knoxville will have alot more crime. It will also offer alot more entertainment, other jobs opportunities, more shopping, more everything.

I have to agree.
I love my home state, and will defend it to the death, but in this case, Paducah is not the place to be for a guy of his age.
The closest thing to a nightlife that town has is going down to frat parties at MSU, lol.

It depends on how he spends his time for fun. Contrary to popular belief, a good percentage (majority?) of 20-somethings don't go clubbing for fun. Sure, there's a subgroup of people that go out every week, but for the ones who never go clubbing their life isn't going to be dramatically different living in Paducah, Knoxville, Nashville, or Atlanta.

Reply to Watchmanonthewall from 2007
Many thanks for your recommendation of staying at the Residence Inn in Paducah for the family reunion. It took us 2 years to plan it but we had every living relative -- 80 members attend. The Residence Inn was just the greatest place to stay and the staff was tremendous. Many family members and myself included have traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe and we all agreed it was the best! Also, we had many places to visit in and around Paducah and time ran out before the family was ready to leave. So, thank you, Watchmanonthewall, for your helpful reply to my questions 2 years ago and for making Rudy Reunion 2009 a HUGE success!!
