In terms of outdoor recreation opportunities, Greenville wins in a landslide. Greenville has the Appalachians literally at its backdoor. Within a couple hours, there are dozens of awesome national parks, forest, state parks... Table Rock State Park is beautiful and it is like 30 minutes away.

I am moving close to Bowling Green, to Russellville, if my house deal goes through. I live in So. Calif. and just retired. I am wondering why traffic is such a concern to someone who is retired??? Unless you have to get to somewhere fast in a hurry, don't you have a little more time and patience that you can spend enjoying the ride and the scenery?????? As far as the smoking ban, we have one here in Calif. but did not expect one in the South, after all, that is where tobacco comes from! If there is only one grocery store chain in Bowling Green, I am sure there is a Costco in Nashville, which is just about an hour away....so go for a drive, that is what I plan to do. Some of the comments stated here seem kind of minor to me, and I have lived in a busy, cosmo area for over 40 years. Part of the desire to move to Kentucky, is to experience a slower paced life, more quality of life, and not worry so much about getting to somewhere so fast, I enjoy the journey..... Maybe I am looking for a different type of retirement than you, but I am only 56, and by no means, not dead or inactive!!!!! Bowling Green is close to Louisville, and the lakes by Somerset, and also Tennessee. I feel the location is great....or try Russellville or Auburn for a smaller town feel. Good luck on whatever you choose....and remember, no place is perfect, it is what you make it!

IrishTiltedKilt...
I suppose the traffic wouldn't be as much a concern to someone retired, due the fact they can choose to come & go at their for the most part. However, I'm looking to find something better then where we're at now, as well as compare to Greenville, SC, so I take everything into consideration when I consider a move so final. Of course, it isn't just the traffic, but the way people drive, which can make a difference in the stress factor
There are states/cities in the south that do have a smoking ban, and it is somewhat important to us since that is what we're used to.
I wouldn't care to take an hour drive just to go to the grocery store. How would that make sense anyhow, whatever I'd save in grocery shopping cost, I'd make up for in the price of gas to go to Nashville??
Minor to one person, may not be to another, just as one person's trash is another's treasure.
Our main reason for the relocation is a lower cost of living, more conservative thinking people, better weather year round. Wherever we go, we'd like to at least have the positive things we appreciate here.
I think you might just have some different ideas about what makes you happy, vs what makes us happy in retirement or not, in the place either of us lives.
We'd choose BG over the other smaller cities, because we do prefer a medium size city.
It's a matter of choosing which city offers more of what we think would make us happy for the long haul.
I agree that no place is perfect, but that won't stop me from trying to find "our" perfect place

There is no need to go to Nashville for most shopping, at least not grocery. We do have a Sam's and two Super Walmarts, tons of Krogers, and Houchens. I do miss my Winn-Dixie still. Kroger seems to eliminate any competiion in this area. I am hoping for a Publix soon though.

Mammoth Cave and Barren River State parks are less than 30 minutes from Bowling Green also.

Thanks for the welcome. Irish girl is excited to be coming to Kentucky with an excitement for a new home and a new town. I can't wait to get there...so many things to see and do, people to meet, and new things to experience. I have had enough of the fast lane in Calif., time to slow it down a bit, and enjoy another way of life!!!!

Did not mean to offend you. Sorry I posted here. Obviously, I don't know what you are looking for, and had no business commenting on this thread. I forget that sometimes people don't want to hear what others have to say. Thanks for putting me in my place. I will keep my opinions and thoughts to myself. This thread reminds me how kind Kentuckians are!

IrishTiltedKilt...
I didn't say you offended me, and I am interested in hearing what other people have to say, to an extent (especially if the poster lives or has lived in the location I'm asking about). I always feel the need to respond back when I feel questioned in any way
Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, in voice or written.
Like I said, we're coming from different places and perhaps are searching for different things to make us comfortable or happy in everyday living.
You're coming from an area much more stressful then we are, so I can understand you wanting something totally different in retirement. I think you may be more of a social butterfly then I am as well, although that makes me wonder why you'd choose a smaller city such as Russleville over Bowling Green.
Hope you find happiness in new location, once you finally arrive
dixiegirl7...
I am aware of the two main larger park areas not far from BG, but it is true that GV has so many more state parks within a short distance away. GV is at the foothills of the Great Smokey Mtns. and there are like 9 state park areas just north of GV. City parks, well that is another thing (especially with disc golf courses) like I said, BG wins hands down! I wish we would have had time to check out Mammoth Cave, perhaps if we had, I wouldn't wonder so much if there would be enough "other" stuff to keep us busy living there.

Social butterfly from Calif. has decided to move to Russellville and will be offering on my house today. I will keep the house in Paris, Tn. as a back up, in case my home inspection were to come out badly, or the owner was not willing to perhaps fix something. This historical home I am purchasing has so much charm. A metal roof, columns in the front like Tara, and even a gazebo and a deck in the backyard....my own little piece of heaven~I am happy with my decision, and can't wait to get to Kentucky!!!!!!!!!
