Looking at moving to Mayfield, Ky in August, got ?'s
My teenage daughters and I are looking into moving to Mayfield, Ky this August. I live in Colorado and I rather doubt I will be able to come for a visit; so I am looking for as much info as I can get on line. I'd appreciate anyone help.
1. There are 2 HS in Mayfield, we are looking into the smaller one (Mayfield HS) . Are there any "clicks" or bad reputations if you go to Mayfield vs. Graves?
. How are new comers welcomed?
. My girls are NOT into sports but rather music, dramas and art
. Is there driver's ed offered?
. What is the legal age to drive? permit? (how long?)
2. What is the humidity like? e.g. your clothes are always damp? you CAN'T hang out clothes on the line to dry? Everyone has AC on 24/7 in summer?
3. I want to live in the country with a few acres. I will need to rent for 2 years due to bankruptcy. I'd prefer to rent to own a place.
. Is there houses in the country for rent or rent to own? How much?
. Is there "better" parts of the area to live in vs others?
. Can we live in a little town (e.g. Farmington) and the girls are still able to go to Mayfield HS?
.Is there a "realtor help" for rental homes? I've tried dozens of web site "house rentals" and nothing comes up for Mayfield except actual apartments. I sure appreciate any help on theses questions

You might check with some of the realtors in town. They may know some of the landlords in the area. If you're wanting to rent in the country you might check with the county extension agent. 270-247-2334. I'm not saying they would know but I'd say they would be a good place to start looking for who has something to rent. Even with bankruptcy you might want to look for houses for sale on contract. No banks involved. Just a "rent to own" type deal. Buying my second contract house now. I can't tell you much about the schools. When I graduated from Mayfield in '74 and moved a couple years later, there were still 7 or 8 county high schools in Graves County. My parents still live in Mayfield and tell me the MHS band is small but packs a big punch. They have won several marching competitions.
If you look at realtor.com and put in Mayfield, it can give you an idea of the price range on houses.
A lot of the information about the schools I can't give you because I've been away from that part too long. lol
As far as humidity, brace for it. Had some friends move to Mayfield from Michigan and, at first, they would run from the house to the car and turn the A/C on quickly. lol
I found some information on the drivers license information on the state web site. This is the actual driver's manual. http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/p...ers_manual.pdf
Sorry if I carry on about Mayfield. I was born and raised there and, like I said, my parents still live there. Now that you've said you're looking at Mayfield you'll have people reply telling you you need to move somewhere else in the state. There's nothing wrong with Mayfield. Plenty of friendly people.
The Kentucky Community and Technical College System just purchased a 60,000 square foot building north of town, near the Mid-Continent University for training displaced workers from the General Tire plant that shut down. http://www.paducahsun.com/articles/s...0aTM_news.html
Hope somebody else will jump in with more information. Hope you enjoy Mayfield and Kentucky in general.
I'll shut up now. lol

Having seen the stunning beauty of Colorado, I cannot imagine for the life of me why anyone would leave there to move to Mayfield. That's not a slam against Mayfield; just stating that they are very different, to put it mildly. If your financial situation is such that you cannot visit first, you probably should not just pick up and move, IMHO.
Rental houses, especially in the country, are hard to find. And if you want them to go to Mayfield HS, they'll need to be in the city limits, unless you plan on transporting them daily and paying an extra fee.
KY is humid, yes, but not unbearable.
Mayfield is a small town. If you like small town life, you'll like it. People are generally friendly. Any other questions, feel free to PM me....

Graves Co HS as a better educational rep than Mayfield HS, there are places to rent in Farmington, but most are apartments or small homes with not much land. Farmington only has about 200 to 300 people in the area.
You have to be 16 to drive as a rule, there are exception like farming license and stuff like that.
Most of the people I know here are from someplace else so outsiders are welcome.
Humidity, it's all in what you're use to. I rarely turn my A/C on and my neighbor runs his 24/7... I take time to go places and he works all the time to pay his utility bill. I don't think it's bad, I've lived in worse.
