I prefer none of the above. If you are going to make a day trip, especially from the Louisville area, Chicago is the place to be. Why drive 3 hours to Nashville when you can drive 4 and half and be in a REAL CITY Chicago? Now for someone in eastern KY, Cincinnati or Pittsburgh may be better options.
For those in WKY, STL may be a bit more accessible, but even for them, many can reach Chicago in 5-6 hours (or for that matter Atlanta).
I will take Louisville, STL, and Cincinnati anyday over Memphis and Nashville. You guys in southern KY can have those towns!

I'm gonna go with Cincinnati, but I love Nashville. Nashville has an awesome and diverse downtown like Cincinnati, but there is more going on in Downtown Cincinnati than Downtown Nashville. Nashville also seems to sprawl just a litte more than Cincy.

Man how fast do you drive? I have never made it to downtown Chicago in less that 6 hours. The traffic there sucks. I think I'd rather go to Atlanta if we are talking about the 5-6 hour range.

I've never seen anything come out of Chicago worth keeping and I use to work there.

Ummm....Indianapolis??
Tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Walk the canal and take in the Indiana State Museum, Eitejorg Museum of Western and Native American Art, and the NCAA Hall of Champions. The Childen's Museum of Indianapolis -- rated the nation's best -- has an exhibit of artifacts from King Tut going on right now.
There are good things to see and do in Nashville and Cincy. But don't forget your neighbor just 2 hours north of Louisville.

I think I should have restated that I wanted to know whether people liked Nashville or Cincinnati better since they are the two closest out of state cities. Obviously St Louis, Indy, Memphis, Knoxville, Charleston, and Dayton are also nearby cities

Indy is no more than 2 hours from Louisville. Depending on where you are in KY, it's closer than Nashville.

Yea OP, shame on you for not including every single midsized to metropolitan sized city and town within a day's worth of driving distance from any given point in Kentucky! What were you thinking??
