Default Herrington Lake

We are looking for lake houses somewhere less than 2 hours away from Louisville and I came across Herrington Lake as a possible place to buy. Does anyone have any info on this lake? Is it big? Crowded? Can you have a boat and go tubing, wakeboarding, ect.? Any information would be great. If you could compare it to say Nolin or Rough River is it a better lake or would I be better off looking at some other place?

It's not a big (seems a little thinner) but I love it. It's been a few years since I've been there, but it wasn't anywhere near as crowded as Rough or Nolin. I thought it was a lot prettier, too. (Hope that hasn't changed!)

It's been several years since I've been there, but can be filled with garbage at times which may interfere with tubing. Cave Run Lake is about an hour NE of Lexington.

It is thin but VERY deep - an average of 200 feet deep. It's basically a canyon with a huge dam, so it's a vertical 150 feet drop off right off the bank. I haven't boated on it myself but I'd say it is moderately busy because it is narrow and winding.

I grew up on this like on Paradise Camp Rd, I do not know if it's crowded now or not, but when I lived there it was not... that's a few decades ago.

It doesn't look too crowded just from pictures I've seen, but I'm going to try and drive out there this weekend or maybe the next to take a look. Thanks for the info.

Default Herrington Lake

The lake itself is 36 miles long and the Dix river continues upstream from the end of the said lake. The Dix Dam is owned by Ky. Utilities and was built in the mid 1920 for electric production. Now the power is mainly provided by a coal fired plant with natural gas for added capacity. The lake is not a Corp. of Enginers lake so you can own property to the water line. No permits needed for private docks, etc. Highway 152 passes over the Kenedy Bridge from Mercer co. to Garrard co., also constructed in 1925. There is 10 marinas on the lake. Its a good place to live with home values that run the full gambit. Stop by and have a look.
