Default Western KY

We are in the same hunt as yourself. Paducah is in the lead right now because of the shopping, lakes, size and revitalization efforts of the downtown / riverfront. Owensboro is not as west but still on the Ohio, larger and has very low crime stats. Then there is Murray with the college and an even smaller population. Good luck! Post your findings for the rest of we "future Kentuckians", however I'm sure I will always be known as that guy from Georgia.

Default Check out Hopkinsville, Kentucky

I'd also encourage you to check out Hopkinsville at www.movetohopkinsville.com. It's a medium size town, roughly 30,000, but relatively close to several larger communities. It's less than an hour drive to Nashville if you need to visit a metropolitan area.

Cost of living is low with the lowest overall property tax rate in the region. Housing is affordable and of good quality. Currently, there are a number of new housing developments underway.

It's also close to Land Between the Lakes and Pennyrile State Park. So, you have a ton of outdoor recreation opportunities. Local options include our Trail of Tears Park, Tie Breaker Family Aquatics Center, Gander Memorial Park, and several ball fields and athletic complexes.

Essentially, Hopkinsville is a great community for anyone that wants to have space to live and access to everything. Hope your search goes well!

OMG, Hopkinsville is rife with drugs/crime. I wouldn't advise ANYONE to go to Hopkinsville!!!
Paducah? Well...it's okay...but the "revitalization" really hasn't amounted to anything at all, although I give them props for trying.

If you drive through downtown Paducah any day of the week, you are rewarded with stress-free driving, since the downtown is empty.

Out by Kentucky Oaks Mall is a different story, though. Traffic's getting bad out there.

Owensboro? It's ok, I lived there a while but I didn't like the vibe. Didn't seem like there was much to do.

It depends on how big of a town you want, too....I guess I would pick Murray of the ones you mentioned. For SURE, stay away from Hoptown. {{{shudder}}}

If you want a really small town, there's Benton or Marion Kentucky.
Both nice towns...

I am from a county in Western KY which no longer has a working stretch of railway. There is one stoplight in the county and yet it sits within a 15-30 min drive to major hospitals, shopping, etc.

I doubt if you can find many people who have travelled the mileage of WKY roads as I have. I used to sell feed to farmers throughout the state from I-65 to the Mississippi River.

If I can help you, please let me know.

Smile I think you would like Hopkinsville

My family and I moved to "Hoptown" in 1993 when my children were much younger. It has a small town feeling with friendly people. The population is about 28,000 in the city and about 70,000 in the Christian County. We have most anything we need here as far as shopping goes but if we want to do extensive shopping we are close to Nashville TN and Paducah KY and Evansville IN. There is wonderful fishing, camping, trails for bike riding, etc. just up the road at Lake Barkley. We have a new Family Aquatic Center and great YMCA facilities. Not much traffic here. Lots of new construction going on. We have the Pennyroyal Arts Council that offers wonderful concerts, plays, comedians along with Art Exhibits. Great sporting facilities for our adults and children. I think you would love it here we do! IF you have questions please ask.

Default Hopkinsville

My husband and I researched Hopkinsville for 2-3 months before flying out from Southern CA (Orange County) and falling in love with it. We moved here about 1 1/2 yrs ago and have no regrets. We have even joked about winning the Power Ball millions and would we ever move away from here, the answer is always no. Hopkinsville is about 30,000 and the people are just wonderful. It's not Mayberry however, if you put yourself out there people will treat you just as kind. The Chamber of Commerce is very active, the community has new building and expansion and usually plenty of shopping to even satisfy a CA avid shopper. We chose Hopkinsville/Christian County as it is centrally located and close to lakes, has a nice size horse community, wonderful things to do and visit on day trips or just drive around and take in the beautiful scenary.

Just since our coming, our 24 year old son has re-located his family here. Last week friends from CA visited who always told us they would never leave CA and within a day they fell in love with this area and have now bought 35 acres and are planning to move shortly.

No one place is for everybody however, as a newcomer who has become involved with this wonderful community I recommend it as worth checking out. You really have nothing to lose and possibly for you and yours a lot to gain.

I hope this helps. Feel free to use me as a resource, I wish you all the best with your search.

I left Hopkinsville because not so much drugs and crime but the far below average school system. We moved west across the lakes to a smaller town with a far better school system. I would never go back to Hop-town ever and I lived there 14 years. Go west young mover just stop before you get to the Mississippi River.
