I live in Erlanger which is fairly close to Union. My daughter lives in a trailer which has an Union address, although I don't think she lives in the city limits.
Just my opinion, but it sounds as if transplanted Californians are attracted to Union's Triple Crown subdivision. Triple Crown is situated on one of the most exclusive golf courses in Northern KY. It has million dollar mansions, but you can also get a pretty good-sized home on the golf course for around $400K.
Union is in the Boone County school district which is pretty good. However, if you're moving to Northern KY, and schools are a concerned, I'd look into Fort Mitchell or Fort Thomas. Both are in better school districts, and you can get as much, if not more, home for your money.

If you're not too far from Cinci, then you may find places to go to wean you of your home sickness. I live in Lexington & tend to drive to Cinci at least once every other month... to get my fix of Ikea, boba tea, art, and real infrastructure. Other than that, the "change in lifestyle" is something to welcome! I love being surrounded by God fearing people (well, not in Lexington, but the state in general).

I have just read a book written by an English guy who travelled through all 50 states of America and Kentucky was way up at the top of his list, not quite at THE top but very much a front-runner. (California was one of his leading favourites but Kentucky was pretty close.) Must admit some of the states did not seem inviting by what he wrote but I guess at the end of the day it is all about personal opinion. My son is l.o.v.i.n.g. it over in Kentucky too.

What do people do in Union? If you're relatively young with young kids and enjoy socializing with other families, do people head into Cincy? Stay in town? Block parties? What's the social life like for young families?

Union is very family oriented. You'll fit right in. It is comprised mostly of families raising kids. Social life is mostly kids sporting events or church functions.
