Maybe I am just assuming, but I don't think the OP is looking for a place like Logan County. EXTREMELY rural and small. Though it has some pretty farmland, not much there that is attractive to younger people. Especially coming from southern California.

It's true that although I would like something naturally beautiful and scenic- as well as smaller than LA (I'm just so tired of the gigantic city where you can't walk ten steps without bumping into someone) I don't want to send myself into shock going into a town with only a few hundred people. Something midsize would be nice.

Lexington is where I'd draw the line. Sometimes I feel as if even it is too small, and often take trips to Cincinnati or Louisville for relief (and fly to Vegas every year). If I'm not mistaken Louisville is the size of Long Beach - just without the rampant social degradation. I'm yet to see anyone in Louisville so baked that they hit three parked cars & flip over in the middle of the road (I regularly saw stuff like this on Ocean Blvd).

lol yeah I've seen (and met) some real creeps around here. It'll be nice to get away from it. I had a guy actually try to pull my skirt down on the sidewalk in broad daylight on Long Beach Blvd.

Murray State University on the Web . If you look in the center of that page that is marked rankings, you will see that Murray State has ranked in the top 20 in U.S. News 2010 best colleges in the U.S., for the 19th year. Murray State is the only Kentucky college to be ranked for consecutive years. Plenty of rentals around town and not that far from campus. Plenty of recreation with two lakes, one of which is the largest man made lake east of the Mississippi River.
Murray, Kentucky is a nice town to live in also. Murray, Kentucky - MyMurray.com City of Murray, Kentucky
There are plenty of friendly people around here. Wherever you go in Kentucky, welcome, and hope you find a good place.

I agree with you, Wing Feathers. I have moved the other way - went from Lex to LA, and agree with you that it would be utter culture shock to go from LA to Lex.

To the OP: If you do choose to check out Lexington, please understand that college sports and church attendance are the #1 and #2 topics of conversation (by a LONG margin). It's a pretty town, though, and if you like those topics of conversation, it could be a very good option for you. It has a lot to offer.

I think you are correct. That would be the ideal move imho, given this OP's stated desires.
