I humbly and honestly suggest Tennessee, Texas, or even Alabama. I myself hope to move to Texas or California in the next 12-24 months; I'm not a miserable or mean person but my personal list of cons outweigh the pros tremendously when it comes to living in my native state.

I thought you moved to Northern Kentucky.. the most wonderful part of the state

I couldn't agree more. I've been here 18 months and moved her from Florida where I had been living for 17 years. I grew up in the Northeast. Although we moved here to be closer to the in-laws, I think I would have come anyway, once I visited.
As for the OP, I think you will find lost of nice places if you do a bit of research, come on down and drive around a bit and take it in first hand. You won't find any of the "big box" Pet Stores unless you go to a larger city.
It all depends on what you are looking for in a lifestyle and amenities.

Perry County is very rural, wooded, and naturally mountainous, but has been badly impacted by strip and mountaintop removal coal mining. Roads are very winding, due to the (original) topography, and there are many creeks in the valleys and hollows (aka "hollers") that run between the mountains. Sadly, few of them support fish anymore, due to acidity of coal residues and various chemical byproducts. Perry is - or was - quite beautiful, but there is lots of poverty and a fair amount of drug abuse. Housing varies from modern and well-maintained to run-down trailers and pitiful shacks. Schools are improving, I am told.
Nearby is the huge Daniel Boone National Forest, Carr Creek State Park (in adjacent Knott County) and Lilley Cornett Woods, with some of the very scarce virgin forest still extant in eastern Kentucky. Hazard is the closest town of any size, though there are many very small communities in Perry County. The Hal Rogers Parkway does get you to Hazard easily, but don't expect to make any kind of time on most of the other roads in this area.
Perry County has a fine heritage of traditional folk music and folklore, notably through the singing Ritchie family of Viper. Traditional musician, singer, and writer Jean Ritchie is probably the best known of this family, but other relatives continue their family's rich traditions.
Hope this helps...
"If I had a million, somewheres thereabouts...well, I'd buy up Perry County, and I'd run 'em all out!" - Jean Ritchie, "Black Waters"

Thank you Craig, that does help alot, actually I saw a house my husband and I really like in Viper.
Drug abuse really isn't an issue, I am sure that is pretty much anywhere ya go, I know it is here in Ohio too, even if people don't think it is.
Schools aren't really an issue either since we will be moving once my son graduates, or if before he may be home schooled for his last remaining year.
Love the idea of mountains, Ohio is pretty flat (or the area I live in).
How about property taxes, and license plate, licenses prices?

I'm like SFLWR. Never been to Perry County before. But I agree that this is a great state with plenty of friendly people. And plenty of things to see and do. Once you get settled, hope you take some time, possibly next summer, to get out and see the state. You'll enjoy it!
