Lexington and Louisville are certainly "progressive" in many ways, as are many of the smaller towns near each of these cities. Berea is probably the most open-minded community in Kentucky when it comes to social issues, but most people there are quite traditional in their personal and family lives, while being politically and socially liberal. Lots of them are active church members and many work in the helping professions.
However, there's a sort of Kentucky slant to things here: folks may consistently vote Republican but most are fairly personally tolerant of those with what's sometimes termed "alternate lifestyles" when it comes to dealing with actual people who may be their neighbors, though they won't select those who practice them to be their best pals. But while such conservatives may be very vocal about their beliefs, most are very civil and certainly won't egg or picket others' houses, either, and would condemn anyone who tried such unseemly behavior. And they'd do anything to help someone who's in trouble, regardless of politics, etc. As would their more liberal brethren. Salt of the earth types.
I suppose Kentucky is sort of purple, rather than red or blue...

Very well said!
Describes my very tiny hometown (pop about 500) perfectly.
There are a few with what the community would deem "alternative lifestyles", but no one shuns them, or harms them or their property, or even treats them differently, for the most part. Cause that just wouldn't be a nice thing to do.
