Louisville has a few neighborhoods as liberal and progressive as some found in major cities (on a smaller scale of course). There is nothing liberal about the bright red, Bush loving NKY. It is a suburban area, and as such is not much different than suburban areas of Louisville.

My wife and I are retiring and moving from Colorado to Kentucky early next year. We like Middlesborough and only have one concern, medical care for people our ages. Is Middlesborough AGH equiped to handle most illnesses in older people? Nothing life threatening as yet, hopefully not for a very long time.
Landru,
Peace

That is a quaint town in a remote area. You should be ok but I would not want to get in a major MVA or have a heart attack out there. basic service is fine but anything more specific will require an hour trip to Knoxville.

Somewhere around Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. Beautiful homes and scenery. Close to Paducah's shopping.

I don't mind being unfairly stereotyped, so much of it's true. However I believe Louisville can be a tolerable place for more liberal minded people. I'm a native but I spent over 10 years out west, Phoenix, Seattle and San Francisco. Louisville is the most segregated place I have ever experienced and I'm not talking about race.
That's not all bad, rich Republicans have their boundaries, NRA Bush supporting right wing Christians have their boundaries etc etc. Louisville has some of the most beautiful, historic, liberal and 'hip' neighborhoods I've ever seen and it's affordable. Crescent Hill, Old Louisville, Cherokee Triangle. The Olmsted Park system and the neighborhoods they designed are truly remarkable. I'm 5 minutes from the expensive Highlands, the most desirable part of town for me and my 150 year old Victorian cost $50k, try to pull that off in Chicago. My mortgage is less than the room I rented in the flat I shared with 4 other people in San Francisco. I can ride my bike to the best cafes, bookstores etc in town. It will never be as sophisticated as Chicago but it will never have the hassles or the expense either and I'm constantly surprised at signs of progression. The East Market art district and the new Museum Plaza that just broke ground which will bring us international attention. I keep thinking of going back to California but life is too easy here and it is a liberal voting population and always has been, don't let the Courier Journal fool you, look at the numbers.

I live in Barbourville. Lexington and Knoxville with major shopping are both 2 hours away. London (45 min.), Corbin (30 min.), and Middlesboro (45 min.) have super Wal-Marts and cineplexes. London and Corbin are both on I-75. Middlesboro has a mall.

As an educated couple (one has a JD the other a Masters) we LOVE Eastern KY and find the folks very nice. A new lake in that area --- Yatesville -- has potential and you are close to Ashland and Huntington WV - now do some folks live in trailer houses? Yes! And they also live in trailer houses in New York - are some folks above poverty levels? Yes and California experiences poverty - Not sure I follow you reason for stereotyping... Too bad you had a negative experience -- we can't wait to get there (4 years before retiring). Oh yes - we are democrats -- and our faith is our business! I have to agree we can find a building lot on the lake for less than $45,000! Imagine that!

No Highliner, I did not mean that, but since you insulted our less fortunate citizens, I will comment..Most people on food stamps work at minimum wage jobs. The foodstamp program (which they are legally eligible and entitled to) helps them to make ends meet while making sure that their children are nourished..The taxes that are held out of their paychecks help pay for the food stamp program..Some of the hardest working people I know are eligible for food stamps..IMO we owe it to them for doing the jobs in this country that a lot of people scoff at as being beneath their dignity....
