Now you really want old KY? When I was a girl, we would walk the hillsides to gather poke greens and shawnee, both plants that grow wild on steep hills. We'd fill coffee sacks with the tops of these plants. When we'd get back home, Mom would fry up some jowl bacon and pour the grease over the freshly washed greens for some of the best down-home eatin' you could have ever had! As we used to say "It'd make ya tongue beat ya brains out" it was so good. (Yes, my family still does this!)

Oh I almost forgot Claudia Sanders Dinner house in Simpsonville KY! I had my wedding receptions there, it was a true Kentucky wedding! Claudia sanders dinner house is located where Colonel Sanders and his wife (Claudia) lived, she started a restaurant there on the property, while their old house remains the original restaurant burned down, but has since been beautifully rebuilt. They of course serve fried chicken, the KY hot brown, and other southern style dishes. Also the recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken and the restaurant itself did originate in Kentucky.

Don't forget the awesome burgoo at the Moon Lite in Owensboro! Only my mother ever made it better. Not that I'm biased, of course.

For me KY is always synonymous with pies. Transparent pie, vinegar pie, chess pie, fried apple pies...really makes me miss my grandmother's cooking!

No doubt beans and cornbread is the thing. We don't call it "soupbeans" EVER. Either just beans or "brown beans" and fried tators and cornbread. Other than that it's mostly just anything and everything. Kentucky is one of the most obese states because of fast food. It's out of control. I think it's probably because we are known for not having enough good jobs for everyone unless you get a college degree and there are a lot of minorities here who live on food stamps and get fat.

What is beer cheese ? I like beer and my husband likes cheese - sounds like it could be great ! Any recipe for that and Hot Brown (?)- which looks pretty simple but I'd like it to be authentic.
